Information
During their days of space travel, the Chozo discovered the world of SR388. What they discovered a world overrun by a parasitical creature that was destroying the planet's ecosystem. To combat this creature, they genetically engineered the Metroid to prey on the X Parasite, a creature rich with energy. In this way the balance was restored and the X Parasite went into remission to such a rate they were no longer noticed.
The X Parasite itself is a small ameobic creature that is airborne and capable of working in mass groups. Although it may appear at first they are non-intelligent life, they are capable of assuming intelligence and can wield it effectively. The creatures by theirself are nothing, but they have the ability to infiltrate the body of other creatures and take over their motor functions. Amazingly they are even able to infiltrate such complex technology as those found in the Chozo Power Suit. Such technologically aided X become known as Core X.
Even more amazing is that, even after their host is destroyed, they are able to remember the genetic code of the creature. They are then able to rebuild their host again, so long as the virus itself survives. In the same way they can combine the genetic material of two different creatures to create a new 'species' of their own. The virus itself is only containable by the confines of having an atmosphere and little else can hinder them. To date, only a Metroid's ability to consume energy has been known to thwart the virus.
When the Metroids of SR388 were wiped out by Samus Aran, the X Parasite soon repopulated their lost numbers and took over the planet again. When a research party, aided by Samus Aran, came to investigate the planet, the virus infected Samus Aran. Although a Metroid infusion was able to rid her of the X Parasite in her body, the virus lived on in her suit that had been sent to B.S.L. Space Station. With her Metroid infused body, she was able to absorb and defeat the X Parasite one at a time. Throughout the lab she witnessed and incredible variety of creatures the X Parasite had taken over or fused. In order to wipe out the X Parasite, Samus destroyed both B.S.L. and SR388.
The X Parasite was able to possess a large variety of creatures. Although humans were little more than powerless zombies in their control, creatures like Ridley, the Zebesians, and many of the other creatures on the station became quite potent under their control. One of their most powerful sentinels was SA-X, a series of Samus clones that copied both her DNA and her power suit. It was estimated there were at least ten SA-X at one time on the B.S.L. station.
