Ditto is a transforming Pokémon introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Ditto is a Pokémon known for its shapeshifting abilities. It resembles a small pink blob and knows only one technique, Transform. With Transform, Ditto can rearrange its molecular structure into another shape. It usually uses this move to imitate whatever Pokémon it is battling and the Pokémon's moveset. However, Ditto cannot transform well when acting only on memory, and making a Ditto laugh will also disrupt its transformations. It has found some other ingenious uses for the Transform ability, such as turning itself into a rock while sleeping to protect itself from predators.

Ditto are also sought after by Pokémon breeders. Ditto have a neutral gender, but with its shapeshifting abilities it can produce offspring with Pokémon of any gender, the only exception being the Pokémon that cannot produce offspring at all.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Green and Blue Versions, Ditto is found on Routes 13, 14, 15 and 23 and in the Cerulean Cave. Ditto can be be found in the Cerulean Cave as well as the Pokémon Mansion in Pokémon: Yellow Version. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Ditto can be found in all of these places save for Route 23.

Ditto are also found in Routes 34 and 35 in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they could also be found on Route 47 in swarms as well as in the Johto Safari Zone's Wetland area. In Emerald, they are found in the Desert Underpass. In Diamond and Pearl, Ditto are found in Route 218 using the Pokéradar, while in Platinum, Ditto was among the rare Pokémon that could be randomly selected to appear in the Trophy Garden on daily basis.

In Black and White, Ditto could be uncommonly found at the Giant Crater Chasm.

Other Games

Ditto appears in Pokémon Pinball, where it can be found in the Indigo Plateau and is also part of the Red Table where it must be hit to access the evolution cave. Several Ditto are found in the Cave area of Pokémon Snap, disguised as Bulbasaur. The Ditto revert to their normal forms after being hit with Pester Balls. It also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2. Amongst the Pokémon e-Reader line, Ditto was featured in the "Ditto Leapfrog" minigame where the player controlled Ditto to save a Magikarp, Goldeen and Seaking being tossed by a Kingler by positioning itself so that it could bounce them safely into the river.

In Pokémon Channel, it can be found at the bus stop on cloud days. In Pokémon Trozei! Ditto is found anywhere and acts as a wild card that can Trozei any Pokémon. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Ditto is found in the fourth through ninth floors of Frosty Field, tenth and twentieth floors of Fiery Field, sixteenth through thirty-fourth floors of Buried Relic, fifty-third through sixth-fourth floors of Wish Cave, fifty-third through sixty-fours floors of Joyous Cave and the first fifteen basement floors of Oddity Cave. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Ditto appeared on the fist forty-nine floors of Sky Stairway.

In Pokémon Rumble, Ditto could be found in the Silent Forest, Windy Prairie, Rocky Cave, Fiery Furnace, Bright Beach and Eternal Tower. Ditto also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Sky Fortress and Rand's House.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Ditto was originally intended to appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Data for Ditto was found within the game (which attacked by merely stretching out and spinning around), and it was erroneously reported as being part of the game by the official Nintendo player's guide. Ditto would eventually make an official appearance as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where it would take on the form of the fighter who summoned it and attack with all of their moves. It could still receive damage and be KO'd by other fighters.
  • Ditto has also been represented by a placeholder icon (for selecting a random character in Tournament Mode) and trophy in Melee, and an Advanced-rank Support Spirit (which increased defense at the cost of starting battles with 30% damage) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Ditto's Spirit would possess Kirby and fight alongside a Ditto summoned from a Poké Ball.

Other Media

• Ditto has occasionally appeared in episodes of the Pokémon anime, at first in episodes involving the Ditto trainer Duplica. In the first episode featuring her, she was trying to train a Ditto who could not change its face when it transformed; in the second, she was training a tiny Ditto that could not change its size while transforming. During the Orange Islands season, one of the gym leaders used a Ditto in a gym battle. One episode of the Sinnoh season also featured a trainer who cosplayed as Flint had used two Ditto, one of which was Shiny, as her primary Pokémon.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Ditto is one of the primary Pokémon used by the female trainer Green. While not often used in battle, Green instead uses it for her her covert activities by often having it transform into a mask that she can use.
• Duplica and her Ditto appearing in the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga, and Misty also tried to catch one for herself until Pikachu went missing.

• A ditto is a name of a substitution or copy, which is a clear reference to Ditto's ability to copy others.
• Its Japanese name is "Metamon", in reference to "metamorphosis", another word for a type of transformation.
