Goldeen is a small yet elegant fish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Seaking.

Information

Goldeen is known as a very beautiful Pokémon with fins that billow elegantly in the water. Because its tail fin billows like a ball gown, it is known by the nickname of the Water Queen, and it is also known as the water dancer. Despite appearing to be weak, its horn is quite powerful, and they are strong swimmers. Goldeen can swim nonstop up fast stream at a steady speed of five knots. They love to swim wild and free in rivers and ponds, and Goldeen that have been placed in aquariums have been known to use their horns to shatter even the thickest glass in order to escape.

In springtime, schools of Goldeen swim up rivers and falls to lay their eggs. During spawning season, they swim gracefully in the water while searching for the perfect mate. It evolves into Seaking at Level 33.

In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Golden can be found by fishing with the Good Rod at Routes 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24 and 25, Cerulean City, Fuchsia City, Seafoam Islands and Cinnabar Island. In Yellow, they were fished at Routes 4, 6 and 24, Cerulean City, Celadon City and Cerulean Cave. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Goldeen was found by fishing at Routes 6, 22, 23 and 25, Viridian City, Fuchsia City, Safari Zone, Cerulean Cave, Two Island, Three Island, Four Island and Six Island.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Goldeen could be commonly found by fishing and surfing at Routes 4 (surfing only), 9, 10, 24, 25 and 42, Dark Cave (fishing only), Slowpoke Well (fishing only), Union Cave (fishing only), Mt. Mortar, Cerulean City (surfing only) and Mt. Silver Cave. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they could also be found by fishing in the Safari Zone's Rocky Beach and Swamp areas. Goldeen could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Blue Lake and Warm Beach courses.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Goldeen was uncommonly found by fishing with the Old or Good Rods at Routes 102, 111, 114, 117 and 120, Petalburg City, Meteor Falls, Safari Zone and Victory Road. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Goldeen could be fished with the Good Rod at Routes 203, 204, 209 and 214, Twinleaf Town, Lake Verity, Lake Acuity, Lake Valor, Resort Area and Sendoff Spring.

In Black and White, they were commonly fished at Routes 3, 11 and 14, Striation City, Pinwheel Forest, Lostlorn Forest and Abundant Shrine.

In Pokémon Snap, Goldeen could be photographed at the Valley area. In Pokémon Pinball, it could be caught at Viridian City, Mt. Moon, Cerulean City, Cycling Road, Fuchsia City and Seafoam Islands. Goldeen also appeared in several of the Pokémon e-Reader games, being featured as prey for Kingler in "Kingler's Day", being saved from a Kingler by a Ditto in "Ditto Leapfrog" and being part of a chain of Pokémon holding Pikachu underwater in "Lifesaver". In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it could be caught at the Lake on the Sapphire Field.

In Pokémon Channel, it appeared within the Secret Cove. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Phobos Submarine, Endless Level 13, Forever Level 13 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Goldeen was recruited at the first five floors of Waterfall Pond, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at the first twenty-four basement floors of Lake Afar. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Safra Sea. Goldeen also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

• Goldeen has made a recurring appearance throughout every game of the Super Smash Bros. series as one of the Pokémon that can be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. It is known for being the comically useless choice, as all it does upon being summoned is to perform a Splash attack in the form of flopping around harmlessly. A float of Goldeen was also present in the Poké Floats stage of Super Smash Bros. Melee. Goldeen has also been represented by a trophy in Melee, a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Novice-rank Support Spirit (which allowed a player fighter to stay in water indefinitely) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Goldeen's Spirit would possess a team of four Jigglypuff duplicates in a high gravity battle in which a Goldeen would be summoned from a Poké Ball.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Goldeen was shown as one of Misty's Pokémon. Even though it was one of her oldest Pokémon, she rarely used it and it often was ineffective, although it wound up saving Team Rocket's lives by finding them underwater in the wrecked St. Anne.
