Hariyama is a muscular wrestling Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the evolved form of Makuhita.

Information[edit]

Hariyama evolves from Makuhita at Level 24. It has a thick body that appears to be fat but is actually composed of solid muscle. Hariyama's body can become hard as a rock when it bears down and tightens its muscles. They habitually challenge others to test of strength without hesitating, and they love to match their power against other big-bodied Pokémon. Hariyama is capable of sending a ten-ton truck flying with its open-handed, straight-arm punches. It practices these thrusts often, and they also use such moves to snap telephone poles in two and even to stop trains.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Hariyama could be found somewhat commonly at Victory Road.

Other Games[edit]

Hariyama could only be obtained by evolving a Makuhita in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Endless Level 28, Forever Level 77, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, they appeared at Krokka Tunnel. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at Lost Wilderness. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Volcano Cave. Hariyama also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at the Sky Fortress, Fire Temple and Odd Temple.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Hariyama was first shown when Brawly's Makuhita evolved into one during Brawly's gym battle with Ash while fighting Ash's Treecko. Hariyama was able to beat the Treecko and win the match, although Ash's Treecko was able to defeat it in the rematch several episodes later. Hariyama have been used by other trainers in later episodes such as Tyson and Greta, as well as Paul at one point in the Sinnoh series, along with other Hariyama making minor appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Hariyama was one of Brawly's main Pokémon which evolved from Makuhita while fighting Sapphire's Combusken, although it still lost. Brawly used the Hariyama again when he appeared later in the "Ruby/Sapphire arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • "Hariyama" is a Japanese sumo ranking (which means "pincushion"), and its name may also come from "harite" (which is the name for the open-handed slap from sumo which Hariyama uses).
