Zekrom is one of the legendary Pokémon featured in the fifth generation games Pokémon: Black and White Versions. It acted as the mascot for White Version. Its counterpart and rival is Reshiram.

Information[edit]

According to the legends of Unova, Zekrom and Reshiram were originally one singular Dragon Pokémon that twin heroes used to found Unova. However, the two heroes began to argue as one wanted to pursue truth while other wanted to pursue ideals. This conflict caused the dragon to split into Zekrom and Reshiram, and each of the sided with one of the brothers. Zekrom went to the brother who pursued ideals, and wanted to usher in a new and better world.

The battle was a stalemate due to the two having once been the same Pokémon, and the brothers eventually decided on a draw. A generation later, the sons of the two heroes started the battle all over again, which caused Zekrom and Reshiram to wreck Unova in the process of their battle. The two Dragon-type Pokémon disappeared from history at this point, but in actuality they lost their physical form and fell into slumber, being turned into a pair of stones. Zekrom was imprisoned within the Dark Stone. It was said that Zekrom and Reshiram would only be awakened from their respective stones when they recognized a true hero.

Zekrom's tail acts as a giant generator to create electricity. It was said to hide in storm clouds while traveling through Unova.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In White Version, Zekrom's Light Stone is kept at the Nacrene City Museum (having been found by the Relic Castle), but it is not recognized by Professor Juniper and given to the player by Lenora until after the player has explored the Relic Castle. Afterwards, the Dark Stone only recognized the player as a hero and awakened as Zekrom at N's Castle when N is prepared to battle the player. Zekrom can be battled repeatedly (restoring its health every time it faints) at this point until it is caught and must be caught to proceed with the game. The exception is if the player's party and all of the PC boxes are somehow full, which will cause Zekrom to instead await the player at Dragonspiral Tower later.

Zekrom cannot be caught in Black Version. In this version, the Dark Stone was instead at Dragonspiral Tower and wound up becoming N's partner Pokémon. It was part of his party for the final battle, and at the end of the game he departed from Unova riding atop it.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Zekrom occasionally appeared at the Unova Pokémon League stage. After appearing, it would directly attack the stage while wrapped in a ball of electricity, damaging any fighters it comes across and even tilting the stage. Zekrom has also been represented by a trophy in the 3DS game and an Ace-rank Primary Spirit (which boosted electric attack power) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Zekrom's Spirit would possess Dark Samus and focus on using strengthened electric moves.

Other Media[edit]

  • Prior to the release of Black/White, floats of Reshiram and Zekrom were featured at the 2010 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • Zekrom made several appearances in the beginning of the Pokémon anime's Black and White series. It is described as a guardian of people and Pokémon alike, although in its initial appearance Ash's Pikachu winds up being hit by one of its lightning bolts, which causes it to temporarily lose its own electrical powers. It is also set to appear in one version of the fourteenth anime movie, as this movie uniquely has two different versions which each feature Reshiram or Zekrom.

Trivia[edit]

  • The "kuro" in its name is taken from the Japanese word for black, and the "ze" was chosen due to having a tough sound which reflects Zekrom's masculinity.
  • Zekrom and Reshiram were designed to correspond with the Taoist idea of yin-yang. Zekrom represents the more aggressive "yang" and so was designed with a tough and more masculine appearance.
