Dark Pit (also referred to by the unwanted nickname of Pittoo) is a character who is featured in Kid Icarus: Uprising. He is a dark double of Pit's who initially appears to be an antagonist within Uprising but eventually becomes a rival and an ally, as well as being temporarily playable.
Background[edit]
Dark Pit was created through Pandora's Mirror of Truth when it caught Pit's reflection just before he destroyed it at the end of Chapter 5. The Mirror was being used to reproduce monsters for the Underworld army, so Dark Pit was born with an edgy and violent personality. However, it seems that Pit's destruction of the Mirror preventing the copying from being completed, specifically in that Dark Pit was born without feeling any allegiance to the Underworld. Pandora expected him to serve her and destroy Pit, but Dark Pit instead turned on Pandora and helped Pit to destroy her. Dark Pit proceeded to suckerpunch Pit and accused him of copying his style before absorbing Pandora's remaining power from her remains. While he had this power, his wings possessed unlimited flight - in stark contrast to Pit's, which only could be empowered with flight by Palutena for five minute intervals.
Dark Pit spent some time on the run and began to fight off both Pit and the Underworld forces in Chapter 6. Medusa was intrigued by Dark Pit and tried to offer him guidance, but he refused her offer and instead promised to take her out before destroying Pit. Dark Pit was rashly driven by a desire for independence and mocked Pit's loyalty to Palutena while refusing to have a similar type of relationship with Medusa. He also continued to accuse Pit of copying his style, because Dark Pit believed himself to be a personification of Pit's true self which he keeps hidden. He accused Pit of secretly doubting Palutena in the same way that Dark Pit does, but Pit denied this and stood by his absolute faith in her. Pit and Palutena also coined the nickname "Pittoo" for him, which infuriated him. After being defeated at the end of the chapter, Dark Pit was able to retreat for the time being.
He showed up again in Chapter 9 when Pit was fighting his way through the Underworld to reach Medusa's stronghold. Dark Pit arrived to help destroy some of the swarm of enemies, seemingly to prove that he was better at it than Pit was, but Palutena suspected that Dark Pit arrived because he sensed Pit was in danger. Soon afterwards, Pit engaged in battle with the Underworld Guardian, and Dark Pit arrived just in time to finish it off with a surprisingly effective kick to its face. He urged Pit to go on before more reinforcements came, presumably staying behind to keep fending off the monsters, and once more told Pit to stop referring to him as "Pittoo". It would be some time after Medusa's defeat before Dark Pit appeared again. He made another appearance as a miniboss in Chapter 13. Arlon called him in to defend the Lunar Sanctum's control center, having been talked into it simply by having a chance to fight Pit. However, Pit was able to defeat him again.
During the three years that Pit spent with his spirit trapped in a ring, Dark Pit himself was left in a vague state of non-existence. This made Dark Pit realize that the two of them were truly connected and were two sides of the same coin. Once Pit was back in action, Dark Pit resurfaced not long afterwards when Pit was going to save Palutena. Dark Pit arrived using the Lightning Chariot to keep the portal into Chaos Vortex open. Within the vortex, he and Pit worked together to destroy the Chaos Kin and free Palutena's soul. However, the Chaos Kin used its last moments to attack Dark Pit and made him begin to fall to a seemingly certain death. Pit dove down after them and burned up his wings to save Dark Pit. This cost Pit his life, but Palutena had a solution that would restore him.
Under the instruction of Palutena and Viridi, Dark Pit infiltrated the City of Souls in order to find the Rewind Spring while battling with the forces of Hades. While Hades revealed the truth behind his vast resources, Dark Pit told off all of the gods for endangering all other lives through their conflict. Once he arrived at the Rewind Spring, there was another complication as it turned out that a piece of Pandora had survived by entering Dark Pit. She used the Rewind Spring to revive herself with a beautiful human body, but Dark Pit battled and destroyed her. Dark Pit was then able to revive Pit with the Spring's effect and then found out the hard way that he no longer had unlimited power of flight. He was saved by Viridi pulling him out of the area. In the following chapter, he wound up sensing Pit was in danger after being consumed by Hades and arrived in the Lightning Chariot, escaping with Pit in tow.
Dark Pit did not appear again until the ending, when took flight alongside Pit (with the power of flight seemingly granted by Palutena), and they flew towards the sunset.
Abilities[edit]
The following are his special moves in the Smash series:
- Standard Special Move: Silver Bow - This simply involves firing a dark arrow from Dark Pit's Silver Bow.
- Side Special Move: Electroshock Arm - Dark Pit dashes forward and delivers an electrically-charged uppercut.
- Up Special Move: Power of Flight - This move involves Dark Pit using his wings to boost himself through the air temporarily. It is an inoffensive move that is primarily used for recovery purposes.
- Down Special Move: Guardian Orbitars - One orbitar is produced on each side of Dark Pit, and they temporarily act as shields. This can be used to reflect projectiles.
- Final Smash: Dark Pit Staff - Dark Pit's Final Smash can be used after he's activated a Smash Ball. This move involves Dark Pit firing a powerful beam from his staff directly ahead of him. It can hit multiple opponents at the same time, but the character in front will receive the most damage.

Gameplay-wise, he is largely a 'clone' of Pit's moveset (which causes him to be designated as an Echo Fighter in Ultimate), with some notable differences being his bow being different, his wielding an Electroshock Arm instead of Pit's Uppercut Arm and his Final Smash being different. In the 3DS game, he was unlocked by playing 50 Vs. Matches or by beating Classic Mode three times, and in the Wii U version, he was unlocked by playing 40 Vs. Whenever the crowd cheers for Dark Pit in the 3DS/Wii U installment, they use the name "Pittoo". Additionally, in the Wii U game, Pit can trigger special conversations with Palutena and Viridi by using a smash taunt in the Palutena's Temple level. Dark Pit will intervene in one conversation about him, and that conversation reveals that Dark Pit has joined Viridi's Forces of Nature in the aftermath of Uprising.
His appearance in the 3DS/Wii U installment is also accompanied by two different unlockable trophies as well as one for his Final Smash in the Wii U game. In Ultimate, he has his own Fighter Spirit that can be gained through his completion of the game or bought from the Vault's shop.
Ultimate: Adventure and Classic Modes[edit]
In the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "World of Light", Dark Pit appears in the opening cutscene, where he attempts to fly away from Galeem's beams of light alongside Pit. However, both of them lose their powers of flight after Palutena is defeated (despite Dark Pit's power of flight seemingly coming from Viridi), and they are both caught by his light. Dark Pit could later be found at the Dracula's Castle area, where he could be awakened and recruited by defeating him.
His Classic Mode route is called "Created Warriors". It is themed around fighting against characters who were created as clones of others (including characters wearing the costumes of their clones, such as Captain Falcon in his Blood Falcon costume). The last pre-boss battle is against Pit, likely to acknowledge Dark Pit's own nature as a clone. The boss of the route was Galleom, with Pit acting as Dark Pit's teammate.
Trivia[edit]
- Preceding Dark Pit's existence, one of Pit's alternate costumes in Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a dark version of his costume which has similarities to Dark Pit's design.
