Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, an Inkling was incorporated into the series as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The default form of the Inkling is an orange-haired girl Inkling, but different designs of both genders are available through alternate costumes. Their moves are based on their abilities from the games, and they even have a meter known as the Ink ank which monitors their available levels of ink and must be periodically recharged. The ink can cover other opponents to increase the damage that the matching Inkling can inflict on them. In Ultimate, the Inkling has to be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters, or by awakening the Inkling in Adventure Mode. Mii Fighter costumes for Inklings (an Inkling costume set for Mii Gunners as well as an Inkling Squid Hat) had initially been made available as DLC for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U. These costumes returned within the base game of Ultimate and were joined by costumes based on Splatoon 2 designs.
    • In the 3DS/Wii U game, an Inkling trophy could also be unlocked with the purchase of the Inkling Outfit DLC. In Ultimate, there were two Fighter Spirit of the Inkling (one for each gender), and there was also an Ace-rank Support Spirit of an Inkling Squid (which boosted the power of up special moves).
    • In the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "World of Light", two Inklings appeared in the opening cutscene. They were part of the forces assembled to oppose Galeem's Master Hand army. When Galeem unleashed his beams of lights, the Inklings were seen retreating into a pool of ink, but they were still struck by the beam. The Inkling could later be found at a city area, and she could be awakened and recruited into the playable roster by defeating her in battle. The Inkling's personal Classic Mode route in the game was called "An Inkredible Journey". Its theme was that each stage and opponent(s) matched a certain color, and the final boss of the route was Marx, who uses rainbow wings and is associated with the Paint ability.
  • In Yoshi's Woolly World, there were Yoshi patterns for Inkling Boy, Inking Girl and Inkling Squid that were each unlocked by scanning the respective amiibo. There were also addtional Inkling-based skins (Purple Inkling Boy, Green Inkling Girl and Orange Inkling Squid) that were made available in Poochy & Yoshi's Wooly World.
  • In Super Mario Maker, there were three different Inkling-based costumes (Inkling Squid, Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl) that Mario could possibly turn into when using a Mystery Mushroom. The costumes could be unlocked by scanning the matching amiibo or as a random prize for completion of a 100 Mario Challenge (on Normal or harder for the squid, and on Expert or harder for the other two).
  • Inkling clothing and wigs could be unlocked in Miitomo and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
  • As part of the Welcome amiibo version of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, scanning any Inkling-based amiibo could unlock a villager named Inkwell, who is loosely based on the Inkling Squid, despite being an octopus.
  • Male and female Inklings appeared as playable racers in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
  • The Squid was included as a playable character in Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun!.

Trivia[edit]

  • The female Inkling was created first, due to the shortage of female Nintendo protagonists, and for a while the developers did not consider creating male Inklings as playable characters.
