Debut Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic

Wart is the head frog in charge of the invasion of Sub-Con and the main villain of both Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and the altered version, Super Mario Bros. 2.

Background[edit]

Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

With his five top henchmen (Mouser, Triclyde, Clawgrip, Fryguy, and Robirdo) and his army of minions, he was able to capture the Sub-Conians and trap them inside a vase. He used the Dream Machine to start spreading bad things into the dream world of Sub-Con. However, his plans were foiled when Mario and his friends defeated his minions and invaded his own palace.

Wart was quite impervious to attacks and was able to spew out giant bubbles. However, a problem with the Dream Machine caused it to start spewing random vegetables, the one thing Wart could not stand. So, defeating him was a matter of avoiding his bubbles and throwing vegetables into his mouth until Wart was too sick to fight anymore. During the victory celebration, Wart was carried off by the Sub-Conians to face whatever fate awaited him.

His role was mostly similar in Doki Doki Panic, except instead of a dream world, he had taken over a world within a storybook and captured two children who had been reading the book. Instead of Mario and company, he was thwarted by the family of a boy named Imajin.

Link's Awakening[edit]

Mamu

In Link's Awakening, which was also set within a dream world, Wart made a cameo appearance under his Japanese name of Mamu. Mamu was shown to be a famous musical artist living in a hidden chamber under the Signpost Maze. There, he practiced his newest songs before releasing them. He was apparently a famous musician and happened to be rather vain about it and did nothing for free. As a frong, he had a habit of mixing in a few ribbits and croaks with his dialogue.

Link was able to make it through the Signpost Maze and meet up with Mamu during the events of the game. After a brief introduction, Mamu offered to let Link hear his new song, but only if he paid him 300 rupees. After being paid, Mamu and his two backup frogs played the Frog's Song of Soul, which Link dutifully learned to play on his ocarina. Link was later able to use the Frog Song of Soul to revive the Flying Rooster. Mamu and his bandmates left afterwards, and the signs in the Signpost Maze reported that they had gone on tour.

At the end of the game, Koholint Island and all of its inhabitants ceased to exist when the Wind Fish woke up from his dream. It is unknown if this applies to Mamu or not. If he is the same Mamu/Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2, it is theoretically possible that he was not actually a construct of the Wind Fish's dream and could have left for another dream.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Hyrule Warriors, Ganondorf has an alternate costume originally available through the Link's Awakening pack that is green in coloration. This seems to be in reference to Mamu, and it being applied to Ganondorf may specifically be referencing Wart's original role as a villain in Super Mario Bros. 2.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Wart appeared as an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit. He was represented by his official artwork from Super Mario Advance. In Spirit battles, his Spirit would possess King K. Rool and fight alongside Peach in a battle above a slumber-inducing floor.

Other Media[edit]

  • Wart appeared in one issue of Nintendo Comics System, entitled "Cloud Burst", which had him abducting King Toadstool and trying to flood the Mushroom Kingdom; oddly, in this appearance, Wart looked more like a crocodile then a frog, having a snout, fangs and scales.
  • Wart also appeared in the Nintendo Adventure Book "Doors to Doom" where he helped Mario and Luigi and was dressed as a skateboarder; it is possible that this was an alternate universe version of Wart, due to the fact that "Doors to Doom" involved Mario and Luigi being flung into several different dimensions.

Trivia[edit]

  • His actual first appearance was in the Japanese-only game Doki Doki Panic, which the American Super Mario Bros. 2 was based off of. In this game, his name was Mamu, the name used later in Link's Awakening.
  • In the GBA remake he says his only line within a Mario game, "I am the great Wart!" which is heard audibly before facing him.
  • Wart was mentioned in the Shy Guy's character description in Mario Superstar Baseball.
  • He was mentioned in Paper Mario: Color Splash, by a Toad who says that he saw Wart in a dream and went on to wonder if it really was a dream, in reference to the nature of the ending of Super Mario Bros. 2. This marks the only time Wart has been alluded to in dialogue outside of his original appearance.
  • The concept of singing frogs from Link's Awakening was carried on into Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. In the former, all of the different ocarina songs can be played for them to earn prizes. In Majora's Mask, Link could use the Don Gero's Mask to find and assemble the frogs to play a song.
  • The character of Wart Jr. in the Animal Crossing series may be an homage or relation to Wart.
