Lana is a Pokémon trainer who appeared as an opponent in Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. She is one of the seven trial captains of the Alola region, among which she acts as one of the three captains for Akala Island. She specializes in Water-type Pokémon and thus guards the Water-type Z-Crystal, known as Waterinium Z.

Background

Lana was born to a family who lived at Konikoni City on Akala Island. Her father was a sailor, and she sometimes helped him on his boat. She also had younger twin sisters, Harper and Sarah, who could be mischievous. Lana herself was friendly, but she also had a subtle joking nature and would occasionally spring tall tales on others, such as claiming that the Legendary Pokémon Kyogre resided at Brooklet Hill. Olivia appointed Lana as one of Akala Island's three trial captains, along with her friend Mallow and Kiawe. Lana's trials were held at Brooklet Hill.

In Sun/Moon and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, she was the first of Akala's captains whose trials Elio/Selene could take. Her trial consisted of continuing to battle Wishiwashi in different pools of water, to drive them to a different part of the brooklet, until it came down to the area where the Totem Pokémon resided. In Sun/Moon, she initially sent Elio/Selene to investigate movements in the water without telling them why, until it was time to face the Totem Pokémon. In Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, she was instead clear about the objective and it being part of the trial from the beginning. After Elio/Selene cleared the trial in any version, Lana gave them Waterinium Z and demonstrated the accompanying pose. She also gave the trainer a handmade fishing rod and some Dive Balls to catch local Pokémon with. Lana later appeared during Mallow's trial at the Lush Jungle, where she provided Fresh Water and a Rocky Helmet for the meal that she was preparing. Mallow later had them eat some of it in Sun/Moon, with Lana finding it to be too spicy. In the Ultra games, Lana managed to get out of eating it.

In the Ultra games, Lana made an additional appearance during Mina's trial. She and Mallow had each been entrusted with a petal of the Rainbow Flower by Mina, with Lana holding a Blue Petal. They were found together at the Lush Jungle, where Mallow was taking part in an Aromatherapy session and was surprised by the appearance of Elio/Selene. In Ultra Moon, Lana battled Elio/Selene so that they would keep this a secret, although she admitted that was just a pretense for wanting to battle the trainer again. In Ultra Sun, Mallow battled the player instead. Regardless of the version, both of them gave up their petals after one of them was defeated, and they offered to escort Elio/Selene to find Kiawe at Wela Volcano Park.

There was also another scenario in which Lana could be battled. This could occur at any time after defeating Olivia in Sun/Moon or after becoming Alola's champion champion in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. In this scenario, Lana's sisters badgered Elio/Selene and Lana into battling in order to determine who was stronger. After being defeated, she gave Elio/Selene a gift: a Muscle Band in Sun/Moon or Clampearl's evolution items in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon.

Lana was also seen attending the festivities celebrating Elio/Selene becoming championship at Iki Town during the game's credits.

Pokémon Roster

Lana uses the following Pokémon in battle:

She only uses the pre-evolved forms the one time she is battled in Sun/Moon, and she only uses the evolved forms in the Ultra games. While she does not officially own it, she has also raised up the local Totem Pokémon (Wishiwashi in Sun/Moon or Araquanid in Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon).

In Other Pokémon Games

In Pokémon Masters EX, Lana and her Araquanid were available as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature after she was added to the game in June 2021. A Sygna Suit variant with Lana and Tapu Lele was made available through the Sync Pair Scout during random time periods, starting in May 2023. She has also used Cloyster sometimes when battled as an opponent.

Prior to being made available, she initially made an appearance during the "Trials on the Isle" Story Event, in which the three Akala captains hosted new versions of their trials on Pasio. For Lana's event, she had them fish at the beach. Pasio did not have any wild Pokémon, and so it was instead arranged for Marlon and other trainers to be fished up instead, at which point they had to be battled to clear her trial. Lana also appeared during the "Town Square Street Fair" Solo Event, where she ended up giving fishing lessons to Liza and Tate, who reminded her of her siblings. In the Story Event "Chef's Heartful Delivery", Lana and Kiawe supported Mallow in her attempts to make the ultimate apple pie. After finding out that Victor gave an Applin to Mallow, she attempted to tease them due to the rumors of the Pokémon being a romantic gift. Victor denied that was his intention, and Mallow was oblivious to the rumors, so Lana bemoaned a failed set-up. In "Trainer Files: Akala Passion", Mallow was impressed by the teamwork shown by Cilan, Chili and Cress in preparing tea for them and proposed a collaboration with Lana and Kiawe that was different from the Mallow Special. This resulted in the creation of the Akala Trio Special, in which Lana's Araquanid helped people to cool down from the spiciness.

During the Alola chapter of the Main Story's Villain Arc, Lana was ambushed by a group of Team Rocket and rogue Aether Foundation members alongside Kiawe, Sophocles and Acerola. After Acerola formed a bond with Tapu Bulu, Tapu Lele was drawn to Lana as it liked the tricks she was playing on the Rocket grunts. Lana offered to teach her little jokes to Tapu Lele in exchange for its help, and so they formed a sync bond. Olivia then provided her with a traditional outfit that would act as a Sygna Suit for Tapu Lele. Lana and Acerola combined forces with the other two trainers chosen by the Tapus, Hau and Mina, and together they drove off the rogue Aether members while calming down the Ultra Beasts.

Trivia

  • Her English name seems to be derived from the Hawaiian name for the water lily, and it is also Hawaiian for "afloat". Her Japanese name is Suiren, which is named after a Japanese name for the "water lily".
  • Her Pokémon are kept in Net Balls.
  • In Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, she could also be talked to at her home during the postgame, where she would muse on wanting a Fishing League in addition to the Pokémon League and claimed that she would be its first champion.
