Cloyster is a mollusk-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Shellder.
Information[edit]
Cloyster evolves from Shellder when exposed to a Water Stone. Like its prior form, Cloyster is protected by a shell that is harder than diamonds and cannot even be shattered by a bomb. Its shell can also shoot out spikes and its horn at quick volleys. The spikes are said to be even harder than its shell and cannot be harmed even by missiles. Its shell is impossible to shut once Cloyster closes its shell, no matter how much strength is applied, and perhaps because of this its innards have never been seen.
It only opens its shell to attack, although in most battles it prefers to keep its shell closed while firing spikes to repel enemies. Cloyster that live in seas with harsh tidal currents grow larger and sharp spikes on their shell. It is capable of swimming through the sea by swallowing water and then jetting it out toward the rear, and it apparently has a similar system for firing spikes.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, Cloyster could rarely be found by fishing in rippling water at Route 13, Undella Town and Undella Bay. In all other versions it could only be obtained through trading or by evolving Shellder.
Other Games[edit]
In Pokémon Pinball, Cloyster could be obtained by evolving Shellder and was also part of the Blue Table which triggered Catch'em Mode when a ball was fired into it. In Pokémon Snap, Cloyster could be photographed at the River. It also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as one of Lorelei's Pokémon. Among the line of Pokémon e-Reader cards, Cloyster appeared as an obstacle in the Kingler's Day minigame. In Pokémon Channel, it was found at the Secret Cove at all times of day.
In Pokémon Trozei!, Cloyster appeared at Endless Levels 10 and 29, Forever Level 59 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams it was only obtained through evolution, while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at Miracle Sea and Deep Miracle Sea. Cloyster also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- In the Pokémon anime, Cloyster made occasional appearances and was shown in the ownership of Giovanni as well as Lorelei.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Cloyster was shown during the Red/Green/Blue arc as one of Giovanni's Pokémon and was featured in one of the manga's darker moments when he had it freeze a pair of Magmar which then shattered. It tried freezing Red's Poliwhirl as well during their gym battle, although it survived. A Cloyster has also been shown as one of Lorelei's Pokémon starting in the Yellow arc and has been described as her strongest fighter.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name seems to be a combination of "cloister" (which means to shelter or seclude one's self, as Cloyster does within its shell) with oyster.
