Lorelei is a powerful Pokémon trainer and the first member of the Elite Four who must be battled in the first generation Pokémon games. She hails from Four Island and specializes in Ice-type Pokémon.

Background

Lorelei was raised on Four Island. She met a Lapras as a child in the island's Icefall Cave and eventually caught it. She grew up to become a powerful trainer who was known for having a logical, cool and calculated fighting style. She eventually managed to become a member of the Elite Four that was shared between the regions of Kanto and Johto. In Pokémon: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, she was the first member of the Elite Four to be battled. She bragged about the might of her Ice-type Pokémon, but she was ultimately defeated by Blue and later Red.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, she returned to her home on Four Island after those battles. Several Team Rocket agents were stealing Pokémon from the island's Icefall Cave, but Lorelei was able to defeat them with the aid of Red. Lorelei spent some time at her home afterwards. She started to feel conflicted, because her duties as an Elite Four member kept her from attending to her home island's problems. After Red cleared up the Team Rocket problem, Lorelei decided to return to the Pokémon League and stated that although she felt unsure about the future, she would do what she could in the present. She soon returned to Indigo Plateau and was available for rematches, this time with new Pokémon in her roster.

Lorelei was no longer a member of the Elite Four in the second generation games, with Will taking her place as the first member of the Eltie Four. Considering the doubts she expressed in FireRed and LeafGreen, it is likely that she eventually resigned to dedicate herself to Four Island's protection.

Let's Go!

Within the Let's Go! remakes, Lorelei made an early appearance at Route 10. She was riding her Lapras down the river, when she witnessed the young trainer Chase/Elaine being accosted by members of Team Rocket. Lorelei helped the trainer to fend off the grunts and encouraged them in their Pokémon journey. In these versions, she was defeated by Trace and later Chase/Elaine, and she could be challenged to rematches afterwards.

Pokémon Roster

Lorelei specializes in ice-type Pokémon. The Pokémon she uses in Red/Green/Blue/Yellow/FireRed/LeafGreen/Let's Go! are the following:

For rematches in FireRed and LeafGreen, she replaced her Slowbro with a Piloswine. For rematches in Let's Go!, she instead added an Alolan Sandslash to her roster.

In Other Pokémon Games

Lorelei appeared in Pokémon Stadium as an opponent in the Gym Leader Castle along with the other Elite Four members. She used Dewgong, Cloyster, Slowbro, Jynx and Articuno in Round 1; then Clefable, Cloyster, Exeggutor, Starmie, Omastar and Articuno in Round 2. Lorelei, as she appeared in the anime, appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as the thirteenth opponent of 1P Stadium Mode. She was battled after Ritchie and before Bruno, as the second member of the "Puzzle Elite Four". The Pokémon she used in this game were Cloyster, Dewgong and Poliwhirl.

In Pokémon Masters EX, Lorelei and her Lapras appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. She could alternately be recruited when paired with Cloyster during limited time periods starting in April 2023. When battled as an opponent, she has also used different Pokémon such as Slowbro and Dewgong. In the game's Main Story, she initially appeared during the PML Arc as an opponent faced during the Pokémon Masters League tournament in Chapter 13 of the Main Story, where she had formed a team with Clair. She noted that Clair was more overconfident than Lance, but that also made her entertaining to be around. She also played a role in the Kanto chapter of the Villain Arc, where she helped to look for Red when he went missing. Lorelei also appeared in an extra scene for the Story Event "Team Skull Crash Course", where she bumped into Plumeria and came to see her as a kindred spirit due to her shared interest in stuffed animals. She was also featured in Part 1 of "Trainer Files: Kanto Elite Four", in which she and Bruno battled each other after an argument about who was stronger, and they proceeded to battle Brock and Misty for interrupting their battle with their own argument comparing which of their Pokémon were harder. The two of them then ended up training with Lance and Agatha in Part 2 of the event. Lorelei was also featured as part of the Kanto Challenge in the game's Champion Stadium mode, which mimicked the Elite Four line-up of the first generation games.

• Lorelei appeared in an episode of the Pokémon anime during the Orange Islands arc. She was giving a lecture in the area, and Misty was shown to idolize her. She ended up defeating Ash in a battle easily, in order to teach him a lesson about teaching his Pokémon properly. In the English dub of the anime, she was referred to by the name "Prima" (to adjust the number of syllables for lip synching).
• In Pokémon Adventures, she originally appeared during the Yellow arc as part of the manga's villainous incarnation of the Elite Four. She was shown to have been manipulated by Agatha, who saved her Seel from dying of pollution when Lorelei was younger. In battle, she utilized a variety of ice abilities, which included creating ice voodoo dolls and even trapping people within ice. She was able to completely freeze Red, and also used ice handcuffs on Sabrina and Green (although only Sabrina was affected due to Green utilizing a trick hand) when they battled her at Cerise Island. Lorelei was defeated by both of them. She later reappeared in the FireRed and LeafGreen arc, where she aided Red and Blue against Team Rocket in order to prevent their invasion of her home island.
• Lorelei makes a brief appearance in an episode of Pokémon Origins, where she is defeated by Red during his challenge of the Elite Four.
• In the anime series Pokémon Generations, one episode features the Elite Four as they take on Blue. They are seen meeting before he arrives, with Lorelei taunting Agatha that she would defeat the challenger first. Her battle with Blue is then depicted, with Blue ultimately defeating her.

Trivia

• Her Japanese name is Kanna, named after the Canna plant genus and combined with a Japanese word for "cold". Her English name of Lorelei is likely named after the enchanting siren-like water spirit of German folklore.
• She has a secret love for Pokémon dolls and keeps an ever-growing collection of them in her house on Four Island.
• In Red/Green/Blue/Yellow, her room at the Pokémon League headquarters consisted of a floor surrounded by icy water, and a similar appearance was retained when it was Will's room in Gold/Silver/Crystal. However, both remake games altered the room to omit the water. In FireRed/LeafGreen, her room instead sported pillars made of ice.
