Sidney' is a member of Hoenn's Elite Four and the first of the Elite Four members faced in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, as well as in the remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. He specializes in Dark-type Pokémon.
Background[edit]
Sidney appeared to have an optimistic attitude and appreciated good matches regardless of whether or not he won. He believed in focusing on offense rather than defense, valuing action over words, and he described his Pokémon as "the Dark side's beauties". Others tended to call him a punk, and he took pride in becoming an Elite Four member despite that. In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald (as well as Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire), he was challenged by Brendan/May and appreciated the look that the trainer gave him, as he saw it as a sign of a good match. After being beaten, he humbly accepted his defeat, as he found the battle to be fun, and he urged the trainer on further into the Elite Four.
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, when being challenged to rematches, Sidney was excited to have received one of several Key Stones that had been sent by Steven Stone, so that he could Mega Evolve his Pokémon in battle. Outside of the Elite Four, Sidney was also found by the Battle Maison when Brendan/May first arrived there. He was in the area looking for Steven, in hopes of getting him to come back to the Pokémon League, but he left upon realizing that Steven must successfully eluded him.
Pokémon Roster[edit]

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]
In Pokémon Masters EX, Sidney and his Absol appeared together as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature, after they were added to the game in August 2021. In battle, his Absol could Mega Evolve into Mega Absol for the duration of said battle after using a sync move. When fought as an opponent, he would sometimes sync with a different Pokémon such as Cacturne or Shiftry. He also appeared as an opponent for the Champion Stadium's Hoenn Challenge, which emulated the Elite Four line-ups from each region.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- He appeared in the Ruby/Sapphire arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where he was part of the Hoenn Elite Four who Steven Stone called together to gather legendary Pokémon to combat Groudon and Kyogre. He succeeded in capturing Regirock for Steven. He was also shown to be a musician of some sort, often carrying around a guitar. Sidney made another appearance in the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire arc, where he helped out with the destruction of Grand Meteor Delta.
Trivia[edit]
- He may be named after the punk rock star known as Sid Vicious. It's also possible that his name could be intended to evoke words such as "sinister", "insidious" and/or "sadness".
- His Japanese name is "Kagetsu", from the Japanese name for a jade plant. It may also be referencing the Japanese words for "shadow" ('kage'), "evil" or "moon" (both 'getsu').
