Gastly is a ghost Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the first form of a three-stage evolutionary cycle, with its evolved forms being Haunter and Gengar.

Information

They are nearly invisible Pokémon with thin bodies made of gaseous matter and thus have no real shape. Gastly are said to appear in decrepit and deserted buildings. It can use its body to sneak into any place it desires, but a strong wind will dwindle its body away. Groups of Gastly have been known to gather under the eaves of houses to escape from the wind. They can cloak targets to put them to sleep without notice, slowly weaken their prey using poison, or suffocate them. Gastly have been said to be able to knock out an Indian elephant within two seconds.

It has been said to be born from poisonous gases. Gastly evolves into Haunter upon reaching Level 25.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, Gastly appeared at the Pokémon Tower. In FireRed/LeafGreen, it could also be found at the Lost Cave.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Gastly was commonly found at night at Sprout Tower and Tin Tower. In Crystal, they could also rarely be found at Routes 31, 32 and 36. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they also appeared in the Safari Zone's Forest area. They could also be caught at the Dim Cave and Scary Cave courses of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they could be found primarily at the Lost Tower and Old Chateau. In Diamond/Pearl it could be rarely found at Route 209 at night, while in Platinum it also rarely appeared at Eterna Forest and Turnback Cave. In White, Gastly was found at White Forest.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Gastly could be found at Lavender Town. It also appears in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as Morty's partner Pokémon. In Pokémon Trozei!, Gastly appeared at Phobosphere, Endless Level 38, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the ninth through fourteenth floors of Buried Relic and the first six floors of Darknight Relic. In Pokémon Ranger, they appeared at Dusk Factory and Sekra Mountain Range.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Gastly could be obtained at Ranger School. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Gastly was found at Sky Stairway. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Old Mansion and Dark Temple. Gastly also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Gastly appeared at the Haunted Zone.

Other Games

• In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Gastly appeared as an enemy in the Smash Run mode. They release toxic gases which can alter a characters' stats in addition to harming them, and they could only be defeated with projectiles. Their appearance is accompanied by a trophy.

Other Media

• Gastly has been featured in several episodes of the Pokémon anime. One episode revealed a Gastly to be impersonating the ghost of a local maiden in order to keep the legend alive. This Gastly could talk and was surprisingly powerful as it could create/summon/transform other people, creatures and objects in order to torment Ash and his friends as well as Team Rocket, but it eventually quit when the sun rose, and the real maiden's ghost appeared to thank him. A normal Gastly appeared at the Pokémon Tower just a few episodes later, where Ash temporarily spent some time as a ghost with a mischievous gang of a Gastly, a Haunter and a Gengar. One Orange Island episode showed an Officer Jenny who owned a Gastly that was immune to the powers of Butch and Cassidy's Hypno, and a Johto era episode had Morty using a Gastly in his gym battle with Ash.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Koga had a Gastly that he used to possess dead Pokémon corpses at Pokémon Tower until Ash had his Bulbasaur suck up all nearby air, including the Gastly, and then expel it out as a Solarbeam. Agatha was later shown using a Gastly as part of her team during the Yellow chapter, and Pryce also used one as the Mask of Ice which possessed and cursed others until it was beaten by Eusine's Haunter. In the Diamond/Pearl arc, multiple Gastly appeared in a chapter where the protagonists spent the night at Old Chateau.

Trivia

• Its name is a pun on "ghastly" (which means frightening) combined with "gas" (referring of course to its gaseous form).
