Croco was a shrewd and swift thief who sought out easy marks to rob. He first appeared at the Mushroom Kingdom early in the game, where he had succeeded in stealing a Frog Coin from Mallow and easily outran him while retreating to Bandit's Way. There, Mallow pursued Croco with the help of Mario. After a long chase through Bandit's Way, Mario was able to corner Croco and forced him into a fight. After Croco was defeated, he surrendered his loot, which consisted of the Frog Coin and a wallet that he had stolen from a Toad.

Croco later found Mario unconcious in the Moleville Mines. He took advantage of this oppertunity and stole all of their coins, accompanied by his gang of bandits. Croco ran in a perfect circle around the mine instead of retreating. Mario soon caught up with him and battled him a second time. Croco added an extra twist by stealing Mario's items mid-battle as well. But once again Croco was defeated and forced to return what he stole (along with a Bambino Bomb) before leaving.

There was a spring within the mines that would launch someone directly into the ceiling, and this knocked Mario out when he tried it. Mario was able to catch him and engaged him in another battle. For this battle, Croco would steal Mario's items mid-battle. After being defeated, Croco surrendered what he had stolen as well as one of the Microbombs that he had been using to blast open paths in the mine.

Mario later encountered Croco stealing from a home in Nimbus Land while the owners were outside. Croco decided not to even try with Mario anymore and fled- but in doing so, he dropped the Signal Ring that he had been trying to steal. Somehow making his way to Bowser’s Keep, Croco later opens up shop and sells items and equipment to Mario and his party at slightly reasonable prices. He was last seen competing in the Mushroom Derby on Yo’ster Isle, when he befriended fellow dino bully Boshi. He also appeared in the ending parade with his Sackits as he stole from the Bowser's Keep float and was chased by Bowser - until the loot was taken by Booster's Snifits, whom he then chased after.
