Mallow is a playable party member from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Switch remake. He makes up one of Mario's two party members who were created for the game, the other being Geno.

Background[edit]

Mallow was born to the royal Nimbus family of Nimbus Land. In some unexplained accident, Mallow fell from Nimbus Land while he was a baby. His basket landed at Tadpole Pond, where he was discovered and raised by the wise Frog Sage. Mallow came to know Frog Sage as his grandfather and believed that he was a frog as well. As he grew, Mallow developed weather-related magic. Rain storms would start whenever he cried. He could also conjure up bolts of lightening and snowstorms. At the same time, Mallow was physically weak and bad at jumping. He was also generally timid and gullible.

During the events of Super Mario RPG, Mallow first Mario in a Mushroom Kingdom town when Mario helped Mallow fight off a thief who had stolen Mallow's Frog Coin. Mallow accompanied Mario in his battle against Claymorton before heading back to his home with Mario. Upon their arrival at Tadpole Pond, the Frog Sage revealed to Mallow that he was adopted and was not actually a frog. He also urged Mallow to accompany Mario in his quest so that he could search for this true family at the same time. Thus, Mallow left home as Mario's first ally in this quest. Mallow matured throughout the course of the adventure and came to gain a greater grip on his emotions. As they journeyed, they were joined by Geno, Bowser and Princess Peach. They also learned the full extent of their mission in gathering the seven Star Pieces to restore the Star Road and to save the world from Smithy.

After journeying across many lands, Mario's group finally arrived at Nimbus Land, where the cunning Valentina had set an impostor Prince Mallow (a giant bird named Dodo]) to take the throne. Mallow defeated the pair of them with the help of Mario and the others, and he was finally reunited with his parents. The reunion was short-lived, as there were still two more Star Pieces Mario needed to collect in his quest and more members of the Smithy Gang to defeat. With Mallow's aid, soon the seven Star Pieces were gathered and the Smithy Gang was destroyed. Mallow returned to his family in Nimbus Land and became prince of Nimbus Land in a public ceremony. He rode the Sky Bus float with his parents in the ending parade and leaped to the ground briefly to sound off his cymbals. In the Switch remake, he was seen carrying the lifeless Geno doll around after the star spirit vacated the doll's body, and he joined his other former traveling companions in seeing Geno's star spirit again while watching the fireworks.

Abilities[edit]

Mallow was a powerful weather mage. His special abilities learned over the course of the game included:

  • Thunderbolt: Mallow summons lightning bolts to attack multiple enemies.
  • HP Rain: This magical rain was used to heal Mallow's comrades.
  • Thought Peek (Psychopath in the English Super NES version): Mallow analyzes the enemy to learn its remaining hit points, along with a quote from the enemy's mind.
  • Shocker: This attack was a giant yellow lightning bolt which attack one enemy with great power.
  • Snowy: This attack would summon a giant snowman to crush enemies.
  • Star Rain: Mallow's final attack summoned a giant star that could repeatedly bounce on enemies.

In the remake, Mallow could also take part in special Triple Moves with Mario and one other party member.

  • Star Riders: Carried out with Geno, the first Star Piece would float into the sky, and rainbow roads would appear carrying Mario, Mallow and Geno towards it. Mallow stumbled along the way, but Geno helped right him on his past. After reaching the star, the three unleashed powerful blasts at the same time upon one enemy.
  • Clown Car Barrage: Carried out with Bowser, the three of them rode the Koopa Clown Car together while unleashing attacks upon all enemies. Mallow contributed by throwing balls of both ice and electricity.
  • Healing Rainbow: Carried out with Peach. Mario and Peach channel some power with Mallow as he dispels a thunderstorm to reveal a rainbow that heals the entire party.

Mallow also wielded a number of weapons to compensate for his weak physical strength. The first weapon he got was a stick from Frog Sage, the Froggie Stick, which he could use to whack enemies. He could later get a stronger version, the Ribbit Stick. Mallow could also wield cymbals - first normal Cymbals and then upgraded Sonic Cymbals. Mallow could alternately strengthen his punching power by wearing either a Whomp Glove or a Sticky Glove. The Switch remake also added an ultimate weapon for Mallow that also previously belonged to the Frog Sage: the Sage Stick.

Mallow's armors which could be obtained throughout the game are all different varieties of pants: Pants, Thick Pants, Mega Pants, Happy Pants, Sailor Pants, Fuzzy Pants, Fire Pants and Prince Pants.
