Claymorton (previously named Mack) is a boss character from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Based on a type of sword, he is one of the earliest bosses faced in the game, being the first member of the Smithy Gang to be encountered as well as guarding the first Star Piece.

Background[edit]

Claymorton was constructed in Smithy's Factory within Weapon World to serve as one of Smithy's lieutenants. He took on the form of a red armored humanoid figure with horns and a cape, and he rode atop the hilt of a spring-loaded upside-down sword that functioned as a pogo stick. The hilt had structures that resembled eyes, but it was unclear if it had sentience of its own. Claymorton commanded a force consisting of Shymores that similarly rode bouncing swords and were obsessed with the action of bouncing. According to his Monster List entry, Claymorton loved bouncing even more than his subordinates, and his primary thoughts related to how cool he could make his next bounce.

Once the Smithy Gang began their invasion in Super Mario RPG, Claymorton's force took over the Mushroom Kingdom while Mario and Mallow were dealing with bandits at Bandit's Way. Claymorton occupied the throne room while the Chancellor huddled in a corner, and one Star Piece was kept behind the throne. Claymorton and his Shymores were ready to celebrate their victory when Mario and Mallow arrived to challenge him. Claymorton was destroyed in the following battle, and Mario retrieved his first Star Piece in the aftermath.

Weaker monochrome "Machine Made" versions of Claymorton continued to be produced in Smithy's Factory. In its Thought Peek, the Machine Made would address Mario by name and declare that he's back, implying that the copy either retained the original's memories or had some knowledge of his experiences. Claymorton was also seen in the ending parade alongside Bowyer and Speardovich, with the three of them being squished by Smithy's hammer.

Abilities[edit]

  • HP: 480, Attack: 22, Defense: 25, Magic Attack: 15, Magic Defense: 20
    • Thought Peek: "Boing, boing, boing."

Claymorton specialized in jumping abilities. He would sometimes disappear for several turns and then leap down from the ceiling. He also had fire-based magic in the form of the special abilities Flame and Flame Wall. Claymorton was weak against Thunder attacks.

Trivia[edit]

  • His Japanese name is Kenzooru, based on 'kendo', an art of fencing. In the original Super NES release, the English localization gave him the name "MacK", seemingly in reference to the song "Mack the Knife". The Switch remake would later rename him Claymorton, as a play on 'claymore' (a type of sword) with the name 'Morton', which matched the naming scheme of the other Smithy Gang members.
