Vulpix is a fox-like Fire-type Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Vulpix is a small Pokémon known for its many tails. It originally has one white tail at birth, but as it grows older, more tails grow from it, and it also gains color, eventually maxing out at six red tails which curl. However, it has been said that the tails will only split if the Vulpix receives enough love from its trainer. Its fur and tails are known for their beauty, and it is commonly considered to be warm and cuddly. The six warm tails grow more beautiful as it gets older, and it also grows a more luxurious coat of fur. When it is attacked by a larger enemy, it will feign injury to trick the enemy and attempt to escape.

A flame glows within Vulpix's body that never goes out. When temperatures rise during the daytime, Vulpix breathes flames in order to keep its body from getting too hot. They can freely control fire and make fiery orbs fly like will-o'-the-wisps. Just before it is evolving, its six tails burn as if on fire. Vulpix's only evolution is into Ninetales, when exposed to a Fire Stone.

In Pokémon: Blue and LeafGreen, Vulpix uncommonly appeared on Route 7, Route 8 and the Pokémon Mansion. In Yellow, Vulpix could only be won at the Celadon Game Corner for 1000 coins.

In Silver and SoulSilver, Vulpix could be commonly found on Routes 7, 8, 36 and 37. It also appeared at Route 48 in SoulSilver. Vulpix also appeared in Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, where it could be commonly found at the exterior of Mt. Pyre.

It could only be caught using the dual-slot method in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum; with LeafGreen in the GBA slot, Vulpix would appear at Route 209, as well as Route 214 in Platinum. In Black and White, Vulpix could be uncommonly found at the Abundant Shrine.

Other Games

Vulpix was found at the Volcano area in Pokémon Snap. In Pokémon Pinball, Vulpix appeared at at Celadon City, Saffron City and Cinnabar Island. Vulpix also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as one of Brock's Pokémon. They also appeared in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2 and Pokémon Colosseum. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Vulpix could be snagged from Cipher Peon Mesin at Pyrite Town, and after being purified this Vulpix could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Vulpix appeared at the Volcano in the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Channel, Vulpix could be found outside the Ruins of Truth on clear evenings and nights, cloudy nights and snowy evenings. In Pokémon Trozei!. In Pokémon Trozei!, Vulpix appeared at Huge Storage 1, Endless Level 17, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be found at the first four floors of Fiery Field, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness, they appeared on the first forty-nine floors of Sky Stairway.

Vulpix appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia at Shiver Camp, The Ice Lake, Hiaburu Field and Almia Castle. A Vulpix could be obtained through one of the random trades with Hayley in My Pokémon Ranch, which could be transferred to Diamond and Pearl. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Vulpix were found at the Old Mansion and Ice Temple. In Pokémon Rumble, they appeared at the Fiery Furnace. Vulpix also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Lava Zone.

Video Games

• In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, both the normal and Alolan versions of Vulpix appeared as Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. When released, Vulpix would launch a fire attack, and Alolan Vulpix would attack with Icy Wind, which had a freezing effect. They also both appeared as Novice-rank Support Spirits with effects that allows a player fighter to start a battle equipped with an item (a Fire Flower for the normal Vulpix and a Freezei for the Alolan Vuplix). When fought against in a Spirit battle, the the Spirit of either version of Vulpix would possess a smaller version of Fox McCloud in a battle where the the Poké Ball version of the respective version can also be summoned. The Spirit battle with Alolan Vulpix was additionally set in a foggy environment.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Vulpix served as one of Brock's main Pokémon for a period after his fellow Pokémon breeder Suzy gave him one as a gift partway through the first series. It was regularly used in battle by Brock until he returned it to Suzy when they met again partway through the Johto series.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Bill was initially shown to have a Vulpix that he used to protect himself during the Yellow arc. Flannery also owned one during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, but it was defeated by Shelly's Ludicolo.

Trivia

• Vulpix's name could refer to "vulpes" (which is Latin for fox) as well as the word "vulcan" (in reference to its Fire type) in combination with "six", which of course refers to the number of tails it has.
