Magcargo is a molten snail-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the evolved form of Slugma.

Information

Magcargo evolves from Slugma at Level 37. It has a shell on its back which is actually skin that has been cooled and hardened. Magcargo's entire body is actually composed of magma due to the tens of thousands of years that the species has spent living in volcanoes. This makes its body hot and constantly billowing. Its shell is bitter and fragile, breaking apart with a simple touch. However, Magcargo can restore its original size with a simple dip in lava. Flames also occasionally burst from gaps in its shell and circulate through its body.

Its body temperature is approximately 18,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Water is vaporized on contact with Magcargo. As all water will turn into steam before reaching Magcargo, it can turn a rainy area into a dense fog.

Mainstream Games

In most games, Magcargo could only be obtained through evolution. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they could be uncommonly found by smashing rocks in Mt. Ember. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, they were more commonly found in Stark Mountain.

Other Games

A Shadow Magcargo could be snagged from Cipher Peon Kolest at Citadark Isle in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Endless Level 54, Endless Level 76, Forever Level 4 and Mr. Who's Den. Magcargo was also found in Pokémon Rager at Jungle Relic. In Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first nineteen floors of Giant Crater, the thirteenth through fifteenth basement floors of Dark Crater and the first eleven basement floors of Dark Crater Pit. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Volcano Cave. Magcargo also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Lava Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode featured an ambitious Fire-type trainer named Egan who was striving to try to catch a giant Magcargo near Blackthorn City, and he ultimately succeeded. During the Silver Conference, the Slugma belonging to Ash's defeated opponent Macy wound up evolving into a Magcargo afterwards. During the Hoenn series, one of Flannery's two Slugma evolved into a Magcargo, and she used it during her gym battle with Ash (although it lost to his Corphish). Magcargo have also made a few other minor appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a giant Magcargo appeared during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc as one of the Pokémon of the Team Rocket executive known as Carl. Although it was put to sleep during its battle with Gold and Crystal, it was able to use Sleep Talk to continue battling them in their sleep until it was beaten in an arduous battle. A Magcargo was also featured as one of Flannery's Pokémon during the Emerald arc, along with Magcargo being used by members of Team Magma.

Trivia

• Magcargo's name is a simple combination of "magma" with "escargot" (which is French for snail) with the added pun that "cargo" could mean the shell that it carries.
