Ursaring is a fierce bear-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the evolved form of Teddiursa.

Information

Ursaring evolves from Teddiursa at Level 30. Despite its large body, Ursaring is skilled at climbing trees, and they are known to eat and sleep in treetops. However, despite their climbing abilities, in many cases they have bee known to snap trees with their forelegs and eat fallen berries instead. Ursaring mark trees within their territories that bear delicious berries and fruits. They walk through the forest gathering food on a daily basis, and the forests where they live are said to be filled with streams and tall trees where they gather food. Ursaring can also distinguish any aroma, and it uses this ability to always find any food that is buried underground.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Gold (Silver in Japan) and SoulSilver, Ursaring was uncommonly found at Route 28, Victory Road and Mt. Silver. In Crystal, it only appeared at the Dark Cave by the Blackthorn entrance and at Mt. Silver Cave.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Ursaring could be found only through the insertion method, appearing at Routes 216 and 217 and Lake Acuity (or Acuity Lakefront in Platinum) when an Emerald cartridge was present in the GBA slot.

Other Games

In Pokémon Colosseum, a Shadow Ursaring could be snagged from Snagem Grunt Agrev at Snagem Hideout, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Ursaring was also featured in the "Berry Tree" e-Reader minigame, where the player controlled an Ursaring that had to shake down a tree for berries. In Pokémon Trozei!, It appeared at Endless Level 4, Endless Level 14, Forever Level 53 and Mr. Who's Den. It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first nineteen floors of Mt. Travail and the first seventeen floors of Shimmer Hill.

In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Dolce Island, Old Mansion, Fire Temple and Odd Temple. Ursaring also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Iceberg Zone.

• In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Ursaring made a cameo appearance among a group of Pokémon seen in the game's opening sequence.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Johto series featured Ash's group and Team Rocket being perpetually attacked by various Ursaring, and in the end it turned out that it was because they had disturbed the Ursaring's mating season. Another episode featured a troublemaking Teddiursa that evolved into an Ursaring near the episode's end. As an Ursaring, it found that it could no longer trick people by looking cute, so it proceeded to use its intimidation to get food from Team Rocket in the episode's ending. An Ursaring also attacked Team Rocket to save its child in a Hoenn episode. Ash's group was chased by an angry Ursaring in an early Sinnoh series episode, but his rival Paul was able to catch it. It often battled Ash's Chimchar but never defeated it, and Paul later left the Ursaring at his brother Reggie's house.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Silver was able to catch an Ursaring in one chapter because it considered him to be a strong trainer instead of Gold. It acted as one of Silver's main Pokémon until the end of the FireRed/LeafGreen arc, when he sent the Ursaring to take Giovanni somewhere to recover, and it went missing along with Giovanni.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "ursa" (which is Latin for "bear") and "ring" (referring to the ring symbol on its chest).
