Jarod is the final boss of the first part of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, as well as the primary antagonist during that part.

Background[edit]

General Jarod was the commanding officer of the Begnion Occupational Army during its time occupying Daein. Jarod was known for being cruel, ruthless, corrupt and spiteful, yet also a skilled commander. He reported to Duke Numida, and his right hand man was Alder.

Jarod was first seen at the end of "Prologue: Under Gray Skies", when he chastised a soldier for simply yelling at the fleeing Dawn Brigade instead of pursuing them. After the soldier told Jarod about the Dawn Brigade, Jarod accused the soldier of incompetence and killed him. He saw his hunting of the Dawn Brigade as a game to alleviate his boredom from the small Daein town. Jarod showed up again at the end of "Chapter 1: Maiden of Miracles", when he was angry that his men were not moving after the Dawn Brigade due to a blockade of people. Jarod speared one of the villagers to clear the crowd and advised his men to due similarly while criticizing their intelligence.

He was then called to the manor house after the Dawn Brigade was sighted there in "Chapter 2: The Dispossessed", and he ordered Micaiah to be captured. The Dawn Brigade eluded them yet again, but the Begnion forces were able to capture their ally, Laura, whom Jarod used to lure them into a trap. However, Micaiah foresaw the trap with her powers and came alone, so she was the only member of the brigade captured. However, Micaiah later captured, and the Dawn Brigade became part of the larger Daein Liberation Army. What had started as the hunt for a group of bandits had turned into a war.

General Jarod sought new allies to fight off the Daein Liberation Army, so he called in Fiona and forced her province of Marado into fighting alongside the Begnion forces in "Chapter 6: Raising the Standard". But he did not trust her due to her impudence, and indeed she eventually defected to the Daein Liberation Army's side. After the battle ended with a Daein victory, Jarod had a conference with Numida which resulted in the decision to crush the rebel faction as soon as possible before they attracted the attention of Begnion's apostle, Sanaki. Eventually an inspection team was sent out, which led Jarod to press his hands in exterminating the Daein rebels as soon as possible by luring them into a trap within the Shifu Swamp in "Chapter 8: Unwanted Glory", but they escaped that trap as well.

Jarod then met with an imperial messenger in "Chapter 9: One Survives", and he found out that Numida had avoided persecution by placing all of the blame for their corrupt activities within Daein on Jarod. Jarod did not seek revenge on Numida because he knew that would bring the full power of the Begnion senate down on him, so instead he gathered his troops for a final mission to kill Micaiah, the girl whose rebellious actions had caused his downfall. He brought his troops towards the Daein camp and in a stroke of luck for Jarod they were able to ambush her while she was alone. However, the Black Knight soon arrived to aid her, although Jarod believed this Black Knight was a fraud due to the claims that the Black Knight had died three years ago. Jarod was defeated, and the Black Knight sought to deliver the finishing blow. However, Alder took the blow for him due to his great admiration for Jarod. Micaiah then decided to spare Jarod so that he could bury his friend and prepare to face the apostle.

But Jarod was not done yet. He was determined to take as many people down with him as possible. To this end, he killed the messenger from Begnion and took control of Daein Keep, then began sending his troops throughout Nevassa to kill and destroy everyone and everything nearby. The true purpose of this was so that Jarod would receive what he saw as an honorable death in battle, as opposed to rotting away in a Begnion prison. The Daein Liberation Army eventually attacked, and in his final battle with Micaiah's army, Jarod was slain. In his last words, he admitted that he did not regret anything because he had done it his way and congratulated Micaiah while cautioning her to enjoy her victory while she could.
