Growlithe is a dog-like Fire-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation games. Its only evolved form is Arcanine.

Information[edit]

Growlithe is a friendly Pokémon that is known for its brave and trustworthy nature. It is very territorial, barking and biting to repel intruders. It does similarly to protect its trainer. Growlithe has a superb sense of smell and will remember every scent that it picks up. It can even detect one's emotions through its smell. When it picks up an unknown smell, it will roar loudly to force it away.

It is loyal enough that it will not move unless given orders by its trainer. It will also fearlessly bark at any opponent, even larger ones, to protect its trainer from harm. It is likely due to these useful abilities that Growlithe are often used by police officers and burglars alike. Growlithe evolves into Arcanine when exposed to the Fire Stone.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon Red and FireRed Versions, Growlithe uncommonly appears on Routes 7 and 8 as well as in the Pokémon Mansion. In Yellow, it only appears at the mansion.

In Gold and HeartGold, Growlithe appears on Routes 7, 8, 36 and 37 as well as Route 48 in HeartGold. In Crystal, it appears on Routes 8, 36 and 37 during the daytime only. Growlithe can also be found using the dual-slot method in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, as they will appear on Routes 201 and 202 when FireRed is inserted in the DS's GBA slot and the National Pokédex is available.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Snap, Growlithe could be photographed at the Volcano. Growlithe could be caught in Pokémon Pinball at Lavender Town, Celadon City, Saffron City and Cinnabar Island. In Pokémon Puzzle League, Growlithe is shown as one of Gary's three Pokémon during the first match against him and evolves by their next battle. A Shadow Growlithe could also be snagged from Cipher Peon Humah at Cipher Key Lair in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. After being purified, this Growlithe could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Growlithe could be found at Endless Levels 55 and 75, Forever Level 5 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Growlithe could be found on the ninth and tenth floors of Mt. Thunder as well as the first two floors of Mt. Thunder Peak. In Explorers of Time and Darkess, Growlithe could instead be found at the first nineteen floors of Giant Volcano and the first thirteen basement floors of Dark Crater. Growlithe could be found at Dusk Factory in Pokémon Ranger. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, the player could find one at Pueltown or Union Road. Growlithe also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Fiery Furnace.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Growlithe have appeared in various episodes of the Pokémon anime, as the various identical Officer Jennys are usual shown to be accompanied by a Growlithe or Arcanine. One episode of the first series revolved around Officer Jenny training a canine squad of young Growlithe. In two episodes showing the past of Team Rocket's James, James is shown to have a childhood pet Growlithe named Growlie.
  • Within the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blaine was briefly shown to have a Growlithe that he used to track Red by his scent during the Yellow arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "growl" and "lithe", which refers to flexibility.
