Koffing is a poisonous and gaseous Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Weezing.
Information
Koffing has a thin and flimsy body which is filled with gases that can cause sniffles, coughs and teary eyes. The gases are lighter than air, which keeps Koffing's balloon-like body constantly afloat. Koffing contains toxic gases that can be seen through its skin from a close range. They mix their own toxins with garbage in order to set off a chemical reaction which creates a more powerful toxic gas.
When a Koffing is agitated, it raises the toxicity of its gases and then jets them from all over its body. They are also dangerous because the variety of toxic gases within their bodies can expand and explode at any moment, especially in hot places. The gases both smell and are explosive. As they are poisonous as well as explosive, Koffing are often used by criminal organizations such as Team Rocket. Koffing evolves into Weezing at Level 35. This evolution is actually a fusion of two (or in rare cases three) Koffing and has been described as a sudden mutation.

Other Appearances
Video Games
- In Super Smash Bros., it was featured as one of the Pokémon that could be randomly summoned from the Poké ball item. Koffing attacked by releasing poison gas. It was replaced by Weezing for the sequels.
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime series, Koffing was initially featured as the main Pokémon of James of Team Rocket. It was complemented by Jessie's Ekans and specialized in creating smokescreens. Partway through the Kanto series, Koffing and Ekans both evolved at the same time out of a desire to be more useful to James and Jessie. Other Koffing have also made occasional appearances.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Koffing was featured as one of Koga's Pokémon. During the Yellow arc, he used Koffing's smoke to relate secret messages to Blue during their battle with Agatha. In the HeartGold/SoulSilver saga, Petrel has been shown to have multiple Koffing at his disposal.
Trivia
- Its name is a simple play on "coughing".
