The Wario franchise is a spin-off from the Mario Brothers franchise featuring one of Mario's arch-villains, Wario. The Wario franchise encompasses several very different series of games whose one common factor is Wario as the title character. Since Wario is still a Mario character, and plays a major role in the Mario series, the line between a Mario Brothers game and a Wario game can be blurred significantly.
History
In 1993 Wario became the central character of the Super Mario Land series in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, which ultimately led to a spin-off. The Wario Land series acted a spin-off with several further installments for the Game Boy, Virtual Boy and Game Boy Color. Wario had brief foray into 3-D with 2003's Wario World for the Gamecube, but it apparently did not perform well enough for follow-ups. Wario got an overhaul as a character with the WarioWare series in the same year which featured "microgames" played in quick succession. Although there have primarily been releases of WarioWare games, there have also been two platformers in more recent years: Wario: Master of Disguise for the Nintendo DS and Wario Land: Shake It! for the Nintendo Wii, the later of which acted more like revitalization of the classic Wario Land games.
Despite having his own games, Wario has continued to maintain a presence in the Mario sports and spin-off games, although he has been absent from the platforming and RPG games with the exception of Super Mario 64 DS. Dr. Mario 64 did notably act as a crossover between Dr. Mario and Wario Land. Another odd case is that despite the Mario sports games introducing Wario's purported brother Waluigi in 2000, he had yet to actually appear in any Wario games.
List of Titles
For purposes on the Gamehiker Wiki, any game which features Wario in the title will be considered a Wario game. All other games Wario plays a role in, but is not featured in the title will be considered a game in the appropriate franchise.
