Debut Pokémon: Emerald Version

Lucy is one of the seven Frontier Brains of Hoenn's Battle Frontier appearing in Pokémon: Emerald Version. She is the Pike Queen in charge of the Battle Pike.

Background[edit]

Lucy was somewhat of an antisocial person who relished battling (particularly when she won) and otherwise did not bother talking much to people. She claimed to have "trampled flowers and braved storms" to make her way to her position as the Battle Pike's Pike Queen and also referred to herself as the law in the area. She was never one for pre-battle chatter and would rush her opponent into battle as soon as possible.

In Emerald, Brendan/May could challenge her after completing 27 and then 139 rooms of the Battle Pike. After being defeated the first time, she would appear stunned, grant the player the Luck Symbol and then urge the challenger to disappear now. During the second match, she was hesitant due to not wanting to lose to the same person over and over again. After being defeated again, she silently gave the player a gold symbol and swore that she would never forget them.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

Lucy uses the following Pokémon during the first challenge:

During the second challenge, she instead uses the following Pokémon:

In Other Pokémon Games[edit]

In Pokémon Masters EX. Lucy and her Seviper could be recruited as a playable sync pair at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature, starting in July 2020. She made an appearance in the Story Event "Of Beauty and Grace", in which Flannery and Shauna were seeking advice on how to become cool adults. Their quest brought them to the group of adults they considered to be "dark and edgy": Lucy, Plumeria and Karen. Lucy's advice simply was that she disliked chattering.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • Lucy appears in one episode of the anime during the Battle Frontier episodes, where her Battle Pike is located near Fuschia City. She is shown to have a nicer personality than in the games and develops a crush on Brock due to his squinty eyes that remind her of serpents. Ash manages to defeat her for the Luck Symbol.
  • Lucy also appeared throughout the Emerald arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where she was the second Frontier Brain whom Emerald challenged. She attempted to defeat Emerald by poisoning his Pokémon, but he was able to overcome this with use of a Heal Bell and defeat her. Lucy claims that the point of the Battle Pike challenge is for the the challengers to create their own luck. The Frontier Brains later returned in the Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire arc, where they fought the leaders of Neo Team Magma and Neo Team Aqua, and they also helped in the effort to stop Grand Meteor Dela.

Trivia[edit]

  • Her Japanese name is Azami, named after the Japanese word for "thistle". Her English name may be intended as a play on the word "luck" and/or a reference to lucy being a heraldic name for the pike (as in the fish, making it a pun).
  • Lucy's design imitates a human version of a Seviper, as shown in her slender physique as well as the colors of her hair, eyes and clothing. This association with Seviper extends to Seviper being the only Pokémon whom Lucy uses in both challenges.
  • She is referenced in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, where a person at the Battle Maison mentions having successfully scouted the Pike Queen and wondering if anyone could live up to Scott's standards. This implies that this occurs prior to the establishment of the Hoenn Battle Frontier.
