Muarim is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its sequel, Radiant Dawn.

Background[edit]

Muarim was born into a family of laguz slaves that had served a wealthy beorc house for generations. He was raised for the sole purpose of performing labor and was frequently taught proper etiquette until it became second nature to him. One of his habits was constantly carrying around items needed to maintain swords, as his master would often request maintenance of his sword and would harshly punish Muarim if his needs were not met. Muarim was freed with Begnion's other laguz slaves, but he found that many other nobles still held laguz slaves. Eventually he found and raised Tormod, a beorc orphan. Together they formed a laguz liberation force, based in the Grann Desert, to free the remaining laguz slaves and make efforts to make the world a better place for beorcs and laguz to live in harmony, with Tormod leading despite his obvious youth.

In Path of Radiance, Muarim first appeared as the boss of "Chapter 15: The Feral Frontier". Ike and his mercenaries had been dispatched by Sanaki, Begnion's apostle and empress, to defeat the laguz liberation force under the pretense that they were a group of bandits. Ike successfully defeated Muarim, who then asked Ike to leave the others alone and hurt him if he must, but then Tormod arrived to protect Muarim. Both were taken to Begnion's capitol and they brought their case before Sanaki, who actually saw the problem and sought a way to stop the slavery without hurting the image of Begnion's government. This led to them being sent after the Bishop Oliver, a corrupt laguz slaveholder.

With reforms inspired in Begnion, Muarim and Tormod decided to continue accompanying Ike as members of the Crimean Liberation Army in reclaiming Crimea from Daein. After the war ended, Muarim and Tormod returned to the Grann Desert, the war's outcome filling Muarim with hope of a bright future for the beorc and laguz.

Three years later, Muarim first accompanied Tormod and Vika in a rendezvous with Sothe and his group in "Chapter 7: Gathering Hope" of "Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden" (in Radiant Dawn). Muarim then aided the Daein Liberation Army in their battles in "Chapter 8: Glory Unwanted" and "Endgame: Daein, Arise!". He did face a crisis at one point when Izuka drugged him, which caused him to begin transforming into a Feral One. Luckily, he was saved by Rafiel, who restored Muarim to his normal state by singing the galdr of rebirth. Later on, Muarim spoke with Micaiah about Sothe and her Brand, which he had discovered on his own, and he warned her not to show it to anyone. After the war between Begnion and Daein ended, Tormod, Muarim and Vika returned to Grann Desert after escorting Nailah and Rafiel to Gallia.

In "Part 4: Gods and Men", Tormod, Muarim and Vika were among those spared from being turned to stone. Tormod later was called into acting by a vision provided by Yune, and she guided Tormod along with Muarim and Vika to Oliver's mansion in Tanas. There they met up with Ike and the Greil Army in "Chapter 4: Revelations". After aiding Ike in the following battle, they fought under Ike in the last battles with Ashera.

Afterwards, Muarim became Begnion's first laguz official. He assisted Tormod, who became Begnion's laguz adviser, in all of his following challenges. Alternately if Tormod has been killed in battle, he still became a Begnion official but was said to labor on mutely in Tormod's memory.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Muarim is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters in Path of Radiance.

  • Largo- In the first conversation, Largo observes Muarim in action and is impressed at how strong he looks, then he offers to help him carry some heavy jugs. In the second conversation, Largo recalls his greatest display of strength he could remember and asks Muarim to do the same. Afterwards, he convinces Muarim to engage him in a strength competition. In the third conversation, they fondly recalled the strength competition in which they stacked heavy hams and eventually people on their backs. In the end the winner was uncertain since they did not determine which was heavier, the big piece of ham on Largo's back or Mist who was on Muarim's back. Muarim tells Largo that he is amazing not for his feat of strength, but because he brought everyone together and allowed them a moment to relax and laugh during the brutal war. Largo then offers to arm wrestle Muarim next time.
  • Lethe- In the first conversation, they discuss Lethe's military history and how Gallia favors warriors for their skills rather then gender, which Muarim finds fair. Lethe realizes that Muarim might not have had it so well in Begnion do to his past as a slave, at which point Muarim begins to mention having encountered untold horrors in that time, which Lethe will never know of due to living under the protection of King Caineghis. In the second conversation, Lethe notes that Muarim continuously lifts crates for the others and he says it is because of his instinct to do beorcs' work for them. Lethe states her newfound belief that beorc and laguz and live together in peace, but she also accuses Muarim of forgetting his laguz heritage. In the third conversation, Muarim apologizes for giving Lethe such a hard time and admits to envying how easily she can deal with the beorc, and Lethe suggests he could stand to lighten up somewhat. She then asks him to tell her why he is so harsh with the beorcs and says she might be able to understand.
  • Zihark-In the first conversation, Zihark can't find his bag of sword powder and describes what it looks like, at which point Muarim says he doesn't know where it was but has seen it before. Zihark envies Muarim as the laguz always have their weapons at the ready. In the second conversation, Muarim brings Zihark some of his own sword powder. Zihark is confused as to why Muarim is carrying around sword powder, and Muarim mentions how his slave master had always made him keep the materials for sharpening his sword nearby, and even after being freed Muarim had a habit of carrying sword-sharpening materials nearby. Zihark apologizes for making him reveal the painful memory, and also thanks him for the sword powder, then invites him to dinner. In the third conversation, Zihark brings Muarim a herb that he thinks Muarim will like, only to find it is not a scent he enjoys. He apologizes and says his girlfriend had liked that type of herb. This leads Zihark to tell the story of him and his girlfriend. Muarim then decides to accept the herbs because it is a gift of kindness and apologizes for making him bring up his painful memory, which causes Zihark to jokingly observe that they were even.

Muarim also has an in-built Support bonus with Tormod which increases his chances of delivering a critical hit when Tormod is nearby (and vice-versa) in Path of Radiance. In Radiant Dawn, Muarim also has a Bond Support with Tormod.

Trivia[edit]

  • Unused support data in Path of Radiance suggests that Muarim was originally intended to also have support conversations with Stefan and Elincia.
