Dialga is a legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh that controls time and is featured as the mascot of Pokémon: Diamond Version.

Information

Dialga originally appeared in Sinnoh-based myths as an ancient deity with the ability to control time. It is said that time began moving when it was born, and additionally that time flows as its heart beats.

Dialga, Palkia and Giratina form a trinity, and it is shown that all three of them are in fact descended from Arceus, who can give birth to any of them in egg form (but only under special conditions, as shown in HeartGold/SoulSilver). Dialga and/or Palkia can be summoned by using the Red Chain formed by Azelf, Uxie and Mesprit, which is exactly what Cyrus attempts in Diamond and Platinum. However, the plan goes awry in both versions due to the intervention of the mirage Pokémon in Diamond or Giratina in Platinum.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

In Diamond, Dialga must be battled as part of the storyline after being summoned by Cyrus, and can only be battled once. In Platinum, it appears at the Spear Pillar again once the player brings the Adamant Orb there.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, a newly-born Dialga can be obtained in a special event. If the player has Arceus, they can travel to the Sinjoh Ruins, where Arceus will form an egg containing the player's choice of Dialga, Palkia or Giratina at Level 1.

Other Games

A dark form of Dialga known as Primal Dialga appears as the final boss of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness. The collapse of the Temporal Tower (after Darkrai stole the tower's Time Gears) caused this Dialga to lose its power over time and be perverted into this form, which is motivated primarily by self-preservation and thus by preventing the main characters from changing the past. After returning to the past, the player must battle Dialga and restore the tower, at which point Primal Dialga's future is overwritten and Dialga brings the main character back to life out of gratitude. Primal Dialga is also seen in a bonus episode of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Dialga appears at Almia Castle as a bonus boss during one of the extra missions. There it nurses its wounds from a recent battle with Palkia, causing a time distortion, and it will also use Roar of Time to send the main character and Wendy back in time to before the game's beginning.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Dialga will sometimes appear in the background of the Spear Pillar stage and interfere with the stage by charging forward, slowing down time, shooting beams and distorting the stage (but not to the same extent as Palkia). A trophy and sticker of Dialga can also be found in the game.

Other Media

  • Dialga has been featured in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth Pokémon movies. In the tenth movie it is engaged in a battle with Palkia in another dimension which creates the conflict of the movie. In the next movie it faces off with Giratina, which was enraged by the damage that the previous movie's battle had caused to the Reverse-World. In the last movie it helps Ash and his friends against Arceus and later sends them back in time to prevent Arceus from being betrayed.

Trivia

  • Its name is derived from "diamond", reflecting the version it appears in.
