Clefairy is a mysterious fairy Pokémon introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Clefairy is a rare Pokémon only found in certain areas that had many admirers due to being considered cute and magical. They appear more commonly during times of the full moon. Clefairy also store moonlight in the small wings on their backs, which allows them to float in the air. Full groups of them come out to play during full moons, and when dawn comes they return to their quiet mountain retreats, where they sleep nestled against each other. It is said that happiness comes to those who see them dancing in the moonlight..

Because of their connections to the moon, the Clefairy are rumored to be extraterrestrial creatures hailing from the moon, particularly when it was observed that Clefairy started appearing at Mt. Moon in Kanto shortly after the Moon Stone landed there. Exposure to a Moon Stone also causes Clefairy to evolve into Clefable. Although Clefairy was believed to be the first of its line, during the second generation it was discovered that Clefairy actually evolved from a baby form known as Cleffa.

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Clefairy are uncommonly found at Mt. Moon. In Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Clefairy is also available as a prize in the Rocket Game Corner for somewhere from 500 to 750 coins. In Crystal they also appear on Routes 3 and 4 at night, and in HeartGold and SoulSilver they can be found at the Safari Zone's Meadow area. They could also be found in the Resort and Night Sky's Edge courses of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Clefairy are found in Mt. Coronet.

Other Games

Clefairy appear in Pokémon Stadium. where they are featured in the mimicking minigame "Clefairy Says". In Pokémon Pinball, they are found in Mt. Moon and Celadon City when playing on the Blue table. Clefairy also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

In Pokémon Channel, they appear in Viridian Forest on cloudy evenings and on both clear and cloudy nights. In Pokémon Trozei!, Clefairy can be found at Huge Storage 3 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, they appear on the ninth through fourteenth floors of the Joyous Tower, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness they appear on the first nineteen basement floors of the Marine Resort. In Pokémon Rumble, Clefairy can be found at the Gravel Cave.

• Clefairy appears in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, as one of the random Pokémon that could be summoned from the Pokéball item. It uses the Metronome attack to set off a random effect on the stage. It was left out of Brawl due to Topegi having the same attack.

Other Media

• Clefairy was featured in an early episode of the Pokémon anime set at Mt. Moon where Ash wound up protecting a group of them from Team Rocket. Clefairy was apparently originally intended to be Ash's starter Pokémon in an early version of the pilot episode. They've made several appearances since, including one episode that confirmed them as aliens and featured them stealing objects to repair their spaceship, winding up getting into conflicts with Ash and friends as well as Jigglypuff.
• In Pokémon Adventures, Clefairy was one of Green's Pokémon and eventually evolved into a Clefable with Red's Moon Stone.

Trivia

• Clefairy was originally intended to act as the mascot of the Pokémon franchise, but it was eventually decided that Pikachu would fill that position instead as it turned out to be more popular. Only the Pocket Monsters manga wound up featuring Clefairy instead of Pikachu as the prominent Pokémon.
• Clefairy's name is a combination of the musical term "clef" with "fairy".
