Yoshi's Island DS (originally referred to as Yoshi's Island 2 until not long before the game's release) is Nintendo DS sequel to Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Unlike Yoshi's Story, Yoshi's Island DS acts as a more direct sequel as it uses the same engine as well as similar gameplay and graphics, and a continuation of the first game's story.
Story
This time, Kamek has been capturing seemingly every baby in the world. However, Baby Mario as well as Baby Peach have been saved by the stork, at which point they have been discovered by the same tribe of Yoshis.
Gameplay
The gameplay is nearly identical to the original Yoshi's Island, with the main additions being a second screen and new babies. The player controls Yoshi in carrying one of the babies to the end of the level. Yoshi can switch babies at special stork areas, although at the beginning only Baby Mario and Baby Peach are available. The other babies, obtained later in the game, are Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario and Baby Bowser (although the latter two are only playable in several levels and are believed to have been tossed in at a late stage of production).
Legacy
Sequels
A new installment, Yoshi's New Island, has been announced for the 3DS. Baby Mario is the only baby known to be featured in it.
