Nino is a playable unit in Fire Emblem. Despite being raised by an evil woman, she was good-hearted and innocent. She is the mother of two playable characters in Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi.

Background[edit]

Nino was born to a family of gifted magic wielders who knew the secrets of the dragons. But when Nino was only one year old, her family was attacked by Nergal and his associate Sonia. Sonia took Kai hostage and tortured Nino's family to learn the secrets of the dragons. After they had told them all they knew, they were killed by Sonia. Only Nino was left alive. Nergal saw potential in Nino, and he ordered Sonia to adopt her and raise her as her daughter. Sonia reluctantly accepted.

Sonia raised Nino as her daughter, but she never showed Nino any affection or even hints of love and only expressed disappointment in her. Nino became desperate to find some way to earn the respect and love of the evil woman whom she thought was her real mother. Nino was not taught how to read. However, she was able to learn how to perform magic simply by watching Sonia cast spells and then mimicking her movements, a method that was believed impossible.

Sonia eventually married Brendan Reed in order to gain control of the Black Fang, and Nino wound up living with her in the Black Fang headquarters. Nino's main duty in the Black Fang was relaying messages from Sonia to other Fang members. Nino actually liked living with the Black Fang and came to love most of the members as her family - such as Brendan Reed, Linus, Lloyd, Jan and Legault. Strangely enough she also formed a bond with Jaffar, the Black Fang's merciless Angel of Death who was believed to have no emotions. In "Four-Fanged Offense" (Eliwood Chapter 23, Hector Chapter 24), she nursed Jaffar back to health after he passed out following a tough mission, even though Black Fang law dictated that Nino should have killed Jaffar and fled.

Sonia decided to assign Nino on a mission in "Battle before Dawn" (Eliwood Chapter 26, Hector Chapter 28). She sent Nino and Jaffar to assassinate Prince Zephiel of Bern for his father King Desmond. Sonia claimed that she was sending Nino on this mission to give her experience for one day ruling the Black Fang, but her true intentions were to have Jaffar kill her after the assassination, because Desmond wanted a scapegoat to blame the assassin on, and Sonia wanted an excuse to be rid of Nino. Nino and Jaffar successfully infiltrated Zephiel's manse, but they overheard his prayers. From his prayers, Nino realized that Zephiel was just like him, desperately trying to gain the love of unloving parents. This led Nino to refuse to kill Zephiel. But Jaffar could not bring himself to kill Nino or Zephiel either, and instead he tried to lead her in escaping the manse. But at that time Ursula arrived with a squad of Black Fang soldiers, and when she learned that the assassination attempt had been botched, she dispatched her men to kill Jaffar, Nino and Zephiel. Luckily Eliwood and his group arrived to fight them off. Nino would join Eliwood's group if Lyn or Eliwood talked to her, and convinced Nino that Sonia was actually evil and manipulative. Nino could then talk to Jaffar, causing him to join Eliwood's group after the chapter.

If Nino had her conversation with Jaffar, she would later sneak away from Eliwood's group in the sidequest chapter Night of Farewells (Eliwood Chapter 26x, Hector Chapter 28x). Nino sought out Sonia because she wanted to hear the truth from Sonia. Jaffar decided to accompany her. Nino was able to find Sonia in her hiding place at the Water Temple. Sonia revealed that she was not Nino's real mother and told her the truth. Sonia was then ready to kill them when Eliwood's group arrived to fight her off. Sonia was killed afterwards, and Nino remained in Eliwood's group for the remainder of their journey. If Nino was in the group in Cog of Destiny (Eliwood Chapter 28, Hector Chapter 29), she would try to talk some sense into Linus or Lloyd during his attack on the group, but she would fail in this.

Possible Fates[edit]

Nino has three different endings depending on whom she reaches an A Rank Support with. Regardless of ending, she gives birth to the twin boys Lugh and Ray seven years later. She died four years later (or possibly was declared dead after her disappearance in two of her extra endings), and her twin boys were then sent to live in an orphanage.

  • Default Ending- At Eliwood's invitation, she lived a quiet life in a small village in Pherae. She planned to return to Bern to visit a certain cemetery (possibly relating to her family, or to her close friends in the Black Fang).
  • Erk and Nino's Ending- Nino and Erk were married after the conflict and gave birth to the twin boys, Lugh and Ray. They lived happily together in Pherae until bounty hunters came looking for Nino. Nino then disappeared in order to protect her family, but Erk also vanished looking for her.
  • Jaffar and Nino's Ending- Nino and Jaffar were married after the conflict and gave birth to the twin boys, Lugh and Ray. They lived happily together in Pherae until bounty hunters came looking for Jaffar. Jaffar disappeared in order to protect his family. However, Nino decided to leave in search of him and vanished as well, to an unknown fate.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Nino is capable of having Support conversations with seven other characters.

  • Canas- Nino meets with Canas while he's reading, and she seems interested by his book. Canas is glad to have another reader in the army and offers to let her read his book, but he then discovers that she can't read. Canas then begins teaching Nino how to read, and he tells Nino about his family situation. When she learns that Canas's mother was trying to force-teach their child magic when he was only two years old, Nino told Canas that he should stop traveling and return to his family as soon as possible to take care of his son. Later, Nino is able to read enough to read the names of her real family members on her pendant. Canas is surprised to see Nino's mother is Iris, which is the same name as his wife's sister, whom he heard was dead. Canas and Nino take this as proof that Canas and Nino might be uncle and niece. They both take pride in this relation.
  • Erk- In the first conversation, Nino introduces herself to Erk while he's reading a book and tries to look at the book. Erk politely asks her to leave him in peace with his book, but then he gets angry at himself for being incapable of talking to girls. In the second conversation, Erk decides to lend his book to Nino, but he discovers that she can't read. When he finds out that Nino learned all her magic by imitating Sonia, he is amazed, and Nino begins to cry out of happiness because someone finally appreciates her. In the final Support conversation, Erk gives her the same picture book that Pent had given to him after he collapsed and tells her the story of how he got the book. Erk tells Nino that she remind him of Pent. Nino continues to doubt herself due to Sonia's treatment of her, but Erk shouts at Nino to forget about Nino and trust him. Erk then leaves after his little outburst, but Nino pursues him.
  • Florina- In the first Support conversation, Nino excitedly asks Florina a barrage of questions about herself, and Florina struggles to answer, but Nino leaves before Florina is done. Then in the second conversation, Nino tells Florina about her "brothers", Lloyd and Linus, and the fun she had with them. In the third conversation, Florina asks Nino if she's ever bothered and feels lonely due to the absence of Linus and Lloyd, and Nino says that she felt sad that they had to part as enemies. Florina and Nino both start to cry, and Florina assures Nino that she will always be there for her.
  • Jaffar- In the first conversation, Nino asks Jaffar about his past, and Jaffar tells her everything. Jaffar mentions that when he first heard of Nino, whom had been raised by Sonia, he expected her to be something like him. But he was proven wrong when he first saw Nino laughing with the Reed brothers, and he became interested in her. Jaffar says that when Nino saved his life, he first discovered feelings. In the second Support conversation, Nino gives Jaffar the pendant containing a picture of her real family, her greatest treasure. She says that she does not deserve it because she does not remember her mother's face when she had died to protect Nino, but Jaffar found that ridiculous since she was too young to remember anything when her family was killed. Jaffar still agrees to hold it for her until she is ready for it and says that she is his best friend. In the final Support conversation, Jaffar tells Nino that he can no longer fulfill his promise. This causes Nino to become confused and angry at Jaffar. Jaffar than admits that he loves her, and so he cannot be her friend. Nino replies that she loves him too. He proposes that they live together after the journey ends, and Nino has him promise that he will never leave her.
  • Legault- Nino is glad to see Legault, but Legault does not like being referred to as uncle. He mentions that he is only slightly older then Linus and Lloyd, whom Nino calls her brothers, but Nino says Legault reminds her more of her other uncle, Jan. In the second conversation, Nino asks Legault when he joined Eliwood's group. She notes that he was in the group that battled her brothers in Bern and that Legault's eyes looked very sad. They both mention missing the Black Fang as well as Linus and Lloyd. In the final conversation, they both begin wondering what they'll do after the adventure with Eliwood is over, since unlike the others they had no homes to return to. Legault thought of making a living as a thief or mountain bandit. Nino offers to accompany him, but Legault says it is too dangerous for her, and that he cannot protect her like Linus and Lloyd did. Nino realizes she probably won't see Legault again after the journey and becomes sad.
  • Merlinus- Nino is assigned to watch over Merlinus. In the first conversation, Merlinus is upset by being watched over by a child, and also that she accidentally knocks over most of his stuff. In the second conversation, Nino helps him to clean up and discovers that Merlinus secretly eats some of the others' rations, and Merlinus makes her to swear to keep it a secret. In the third Support conversation, Nino tells Merlinus how he reminded her of her Uncle Jan, who played with her while they were in the Black Fang. Merlinus decided to assume Uncle Jan's role for Nino and offers to play several games with her.
  • Rebecca- In the first Support conversation, Rebecca and Nino introduce themselves to each other and, realizing that they are almost the same age, they decide to hang out together. Rebecca starts by giving Nino one of her baked dumplings and offering to teach her how to make them. In the second conversation, Rebecca is satisfied with Nino's dumplings and then shows her how to make necklaces out of dried berries. In the third conversation, they finish the necklace but find it is too big for Nino. Rebecca tells Nino to give it to someone she likes and refuses to tell Nino if she ever game someone a necklace. Nino decides to give Rebecca the necklace, and they decide to always be friends.
