Jaffar is an enemy in Fire Emblem who can become a playable unit late in the game. He was an emotionless killer in the employ of Nergal until he was changed by the kindness of Nino, the first person he ever came to care for.
Background[edit]
Jaffar was once was nothing but an orphan. However, Nergal found him and raised him to be the perfect killing machine. Jaffar became a silent and emotionless man, skilled with a sword and killing without remorse. He was a master assassin. Jaffar was eventually sent to join the guild of assassins, the Black Fang, as a part of Nergal's plan to control the organization. Jaffar worked his way up through the ranks and eventually replaced as one of the Four Fangs, the name given to the Black Fang's four greatest assassins.
In Fire Emblem, Jaffar was first seen in "The Dread Isle" (Eliwood Chapter 18, Hector Chapter 19). Ephidel summoned Jaffar after learning that Leila was a spy, and Jaffar, knowing the penalty for traitors in the Black Fang, executed her immediately. At Ephidel's command, Jaffar left her corpse outside to horrify Eliwood's group. Jaffar later subduded Elbert during his escape attempt in "Dragon's Gate" (Eliwood Chapter 19, Hector Chapter 20). After Jaffar had a brief confrontation with Eliwood's group, Ephidel sent him back to Bern to await his next assignment. The Four Fangs were later summoned by Sonia in "Kinship's Bond" (Eliwood Chapter 21, Hector Chapter 22) and dispatched to find and kill Eliwood's group.
However, Jaffar later discovered emotions when he met the young girl Nino. In "Four-Fanged Offense", Nino treated Jaffar's wounds after he passed out nearby. Jaffar initially disapproved of this, remembering the Black Fang's code to kill those who fell behind. Jaffar came to care for Nino in time. In "Battle before Dawn" (Eliwood Chapter 26, Hector Chapter 28), Sonia had assigned Jaffar and Nino to assassinate Prince Zephiel for his father the king. Sonia later told Jaffar the true mission: after Zephiel was assassinated, Jaffar was to kill Nino and leaver her there so that King Desmond had a scapegoat to blame the assassination on.
Jaffar and Nino successfully infiltrated Zephiel's manse and knocked out the prince, but Nino found herself unable to carry out the deed. Jaffar then disobeyed his own orders tried to escape the manse with Nino, but he was spotted by Ursula, who sent in her men to kill them. However, Eliwood and his group arrived to save the prince. If Nino was recruited, she could speak to Jaffar. Jaffar would then join Eliwood's group at the end of the chapter, although some among the group (particularly Hector) did not think he should be so quickly forgiven for all the people he had killed. Jaffar then accompanied Nino in her search for Sonia in "Night of Farewells" (Eliwood Chapter 26x, Hector Chapter 28x) and he remained in Eliwood's group for the remainder of the journey so that he could atone for his sins.
Possible Fates[edit]
Jaffar has two different endings, depending on whether or not he gets an A Rank Support with Nino.
- Default Ending- Jaffar disappeared in the last moments of the final battle with the fire dragon. He then spent his time on the run, avoiding the bounty hunters that sought his life.
- Nino and Jaffar's Ending- Nino and Jaffar married after the battles were over and lived happily in Pherae. Seven years later, they had twin sons together- Lugh and Ray. However, bounty hunters later appeared looking for Jaffar, and he fled to protect his family. Nino later vanished in search of him. Their fates remain unclear. In Fuuin no Tsurugi, Lugh mentions his parents died four years after he was born, but he may be referring to Jaffar and Nino disappearing and being presumed dead.
Support Conversation Summaries[edit]
Jaffar is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters.
- Legault- Legault expresses his surprise at seeing Nergal's right-hand man among Eliwood's ranks and attempts talking to him. Jaffar remains silent and only once addresses Legault by his nickname. In the second conversation, Legault says that he heard about Jaffar rescuing Nino and was surprised. He asks Jaffar what prompted the change in character, but Jaffar remains silent. Jaffar suddenly speaks and asks Legault to protect Nino if he dies. Jaffar says that he still knows nothing of emotion, but he is now afraid for Nino's safety, leading Legault to realize that even though he was still silent and creepy, Jaffar had changed quite a bit. In the final Support conversation, Legault tells Jaffar how things will be different now that he is getting softer, as he could be rendered powerless if anyone took Nino hostage. Jaffar says he intends to live with Nino regardless, so Legault accepts this and tells him to protect her for Linus and Lloyd as well, as they also looked out for her safety before they died.
- Matthew- Matthew confronts Jaffar looking for clues as to who killed Leila. He realizes that only one of the Four Fangs could have killed someone with Leila's skill, and he then realizes that Jaffar must have done it. Matthew then swears to kill Jaffar. In the second conversation, Matthew attempts to kill Jaffar, but Jaffar is able to get behind Matthew. But Jaffar does not kill Matthew. This only makes Matthew angrier, and he redoubles his vow. In the final Support conversation, Matthew comes to Jaffar saying his friends have Nino held captive and will kill her if he makes a move. Jaffar obeys Matthew, and Matthew moves in to kill but he stops at the last moment, saying that Leila stopped him. Matthew recalled what Eliwood had said about Jaffar being Nergal's puppet, so it was actually Nergal who killed Leila, but Matthew had ignored this to pursue his revenge. Matthew then releases Jaffar, telling him he was lying about capturing Nino. But before leaving Jaffar tells Matthew that Leila had whispered Matthew's name in her dying breath.
- Nino- In the first conversation, Nino asks Jaffar about his past, and Jaffar tells her everything. Jaffar mentions that when he first heard of Nino, whom had been raised by Sonia, he expected her to be something like him. But he was proven wrong when he first saw Nino laughing with the Reed brothers, and he became interested in her. Jaffar says that when Nino saved his life, he first discovered feelings. In the second Support conversation, Nino gives Jaffar the pendant containing a picture of her real family, her greatest treasure. She says that she does not deserve it because she does not remember her mother's face when she had died to protect Nino, but Jaffar found that ridiculous since she was too young to remember anything when her family was killed. Jaffar still agrees to hold it for her until she is ready for it and says that she is his best friend. In the final Support conversation, Jaffar tells Nino that he can no longer fulfill his promise. This causes Nino to become confused and angry at Jaffar. Jaffar than admits that he loves her, and so he cannot be her friend. Nino replies that she loves him too. He proposes that they live together after the journey ends, and Nino has him promise that he will never leave her.
