Leila is a supporting character in Fire Emblem known as the love interest of Matthew.

Background[edit]

Leila was one of Ostia's most skilled spies, and like the other spies of Ostia was also a thief (or at least disguised herself as one). She shared an ongoing flirtation with Matthew, although the exact status of their relationship was unknown save for that they both cared deeply for each other. During Fire Emblem, she was assigned by Uther to infiltrate the Black Fang and investigate their mysterious activities.

She was first seen in "Whereabouts Unknown" (Eliwood Chapter 16, Hector Chapter 17) posted at Castle Caelin and working under Ephidel. Ephidel assigned her to hide the body of Hausen, but instead she brought him to medical treatment that saved his life without Ephidel's knowledge. She then met with Eliwood's company, whose ranks contained Matthew, and told them what she had learned so far about the Black Fang. She also had what would be her last conversation with Matthew, when he asked her to visit his hometown after the mission so he could introduce her to his parents. He had also intended to ask her to leave behind her dangerous life of being a spy after the mission, but he never got to.

Leila then joined Nergal's main forces at Valor Isle. In "Valor Isle" (Eliwood Chapter 18, Hector Chapter 19), she eavesdropped on a conversation between Nergal and Elbert. However, she was caught in the act by Ephidel, who realized she was a traitor and summoned Jaffar to execute her. Jaffar killed Leila with his killing stroke, and she spoke Matthew's name in her last breath. Her body was left out in the woods as a warning to Eliwood's group. After discovering it, they were all grief-stricken, especially Matthew. He admitted that she had blundered and then returned to battle after giving her a proper burial, thinking that she would have wanted him to fulfill his duty and mourn for her after the battle was won.

Trivia[edit]

  • Similarly, Matthew's dying quote is "Leila..."
  • In Jaffar and Matthew's Support conversations, Matthew attempts to get revenge on Jaffar after learning he is responsible for Leila's death, but ultimately spares him because he thinks that is what Leila would want. Jaffar also becomes repentant and tells Matthew that his name was her last word.
