Greninja is an amphibious ninja Pokémon from the seventh generation Pokémon games. It is the final stage in the evolutionary line of Froakie, evolving from Frogadier at Level 36.

Information[edit]

Greninja is a fully bipedal Pokémon that is known to act with the skill and grace similar to that of a ninja. It can appear and disappear like a ninja, and it is also known for its Water Shuriken move, in which is creates and throws throwing stars made out of compressed water. When Greninja spins and throws them at high speeds, each Water Shuriken can split in two. They have been known to use their swift movements to toy with their enemies.

It also has an alternate form that is based on a concept from the Pokémon anime and is thus known as "Ash-Greninja". A Greninja with the unique Battle Bond ability can transform into Ash-Greninja after an opposing Pokémon has fainted. This increases the power of Water Shuriken.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In most games, Greninja can only be obtained through evolution or events and cannot be found in the wild. The one exception is in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where it could appear in the Poni Wilds after performing an Island Scan on Fridays. Additionally, a Greninja with Battle Bond was received as a gift in the demo of Sun and Moon, which could be transferred into the main game.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Trozei, it could be found at Stage 05 of Renegade Meadow. In Pokémon Shuffle, it could be obtained at Expert Stage: Stage EX24, and it was also made available for several events, including one for Ash-Greninja. Greninja also appeared in Pokémon Rumble World as the back boss of Dewdrop Bay's Castle Moat and in Pokémon Picross at Stage 05 of Area 03.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Super Mario Maker, an 8-bit version of Greninja appeared as one of the Mystery Mushroom costumes that Mario could transform into. It could be unlocked as a random prize for completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Expert or harder, or by scanning Greninja's amiibo.

Super Smash Bros[edit]

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Greninja has been featured as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It acts as a fast and agile character, and it utilizes many of its moves from the games such as the Water Shuriken and Substitute. With its Final Smash, Mat Block. Greninja flips a mat to knock an opponent into the air and then subjects them to a series of attacks. In Ultimate, Greninja changes into Ash-Greninja while executing the Final Smash. Greninja also had to be unlocked in Ultimate, either through the game's variable-based system for unlocking characters or by awakening it in Adventure Mode.

Greninja has also been represented by two unlockable trophies (plus one for its Final Smash in the Wii U game) in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate.

Ultimate: Adventure and Classic Modes[edit]

In the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "World of Light", Greninja made an appearance in the opening cutscene among the force that was assembled to oppose Galeem and his Master Hand army. When Galeem unleashed his beams of light, Greninja was shown to initially dodge one by leaping into the air, but it was then hit by a different beam and fell under Galeem's control. Greninja could later be found and awakened as its usual self through battle in the Mysterious Dimension area of the Dark Realm.

Greninja's Classic Mode route was called "Your Turn, Greninja!". In each battle, Greninja battled Pokémon and fighters from other series who matched a different Pokémon type, such as battling Charizard and Bowser as Fire-types, or Mewtwo, Ness and Lucas as Psychic-types. The final boss of this route is Master Hand (joined by Crazy Hand on higher difficulties).

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, one of Ash Ketchum's main Pokémon during the Kalos series was a Froakie who eventually evolved into Frogadier and finally Greninja. Ash's Greninja developed the ability to change into a stronger form known as Ash-Greninja based on its bond with Ash. Near the end of the series, his Greninja ultimately departed to go on a quest with a pair of Zygarde to destroy the remaining Giant Rock roots. Other Greninja have also made appearances in the series, often belonging to trainers who are ninjas themselves, such as the brothers Sanpei and Ippei, or the thieving Riot.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is derived from "grenouille" (the French word for frog, due to Kalos being based on France) combined with "ninja".
