Wynaut is a small, blue Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It acts as the baby form for the second generation Pokémon Wobbuffet, which previously had no evolutionary line.
Information
A Wobbuffet's offspring will only emerge from the egg as a Wynaut if the Wobbuffet parent was carrying a Lax Incense during breeding. They are always smiling widely and move in packs. Wynaut grow strong and build up their endurance by squeezing up against each other, and they usually perform this ritual on moonlit nights. Wynaut also cluster together in tight groups within caves when going to sleep. It loves to eat fruits and has a pair of ear-like arms that it employs to grab fruit. Wynaut also wind up gathering in fruit gardens after being drawn there by the fragrance. Wynaut also has a shadowy tail like its evolved form, and it will slap the ground with its tail when angered.
Wynaut evolves into Wobbuffet at Level 15.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In most games, Wynaut are typically obtained by breeding them. In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Wynaut are the only Pokémon found on the scarcely appearing Mirage Island. They could also be caught in Black and White, where they could appear at Route 2 during swarms.
Other Games
In Pokémon Channel, Wynaut appeared at Springleaf Field in the morning and on cloudy days. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it had to be hatched from an egg. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Endless Level 11, Forever Level 60, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first four floors of Buried Relic and the first three floors of Solar Cave. A nonplayable Wynaut also appears in the game paired with Wobbuffet and sends the player on a mission to Uproar Forest, remodeling the base in return afterwards. In Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was recruitable at Marine Resort. In My Pokémon Ranch, Wynaut could be obtained in a random trade with Hayley and could then be transferred to Diamond or Pearl (as well as Platinum in Japan). Wynaut also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Beach Zone, and it also appeared at the Meeting Place.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime, Wynaut made an early appearance in several episodes of the Johto series. It followed both Ash's group and Team Rocket around, but the only ones who saw it were Ash's Noctowl and Bayleef as well as Jessie's Wobbuffet. Various Wynaut were also featured in a Hoenn episode where the group was stranded on Mirage Island. Wynaut have also made other smaller appearances.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Wynaut had an early cameo appearance near the end of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc where it was among the Pokémon sent by trainers to fend off Ho-Oh and Lugia. During the Ruby/Sapphire arc, the Wynaut appeared at Mirage Island but did not play a storyline role.
Trivia
- Its name is a play on "why not?". Wynaut's Japanese name is a word meaning "Really?" and acts as a response to Wobbuffet's Japanese name, which is a phrase saying "That's he way it is". There are often gags based around their names which are mostly lost in translation due to Wobbuffet's English name not being any type of phrase.
