Marowak is the evolved form of Cubone that was introduced in the first generation games.
Information
Marowak evolves from Cubone at Level 28. At this point in its life, Marowak gets over the death of its mother and becomes tough. Marowak has a tempered and hardened spirit which is not broken easily. It is a small and weak Pokémon, but over the ages it has grown tougher and more ferocious since it started using bones as weapons. They are skilled at using ones as weapons like clubs and can also KO enemies by tossing said bones as boomerangs.
The source of the bone clubs is unknown, but there are rumors that a Marowak graveyard exists somewhere in the world from which they collect said bones. They also pound boulders with their bones in order to send messages to other Marowak.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Pokémon: Red and Blue Versions, Marowak uncommonly appear at Victory Road and Cerulean Cave. In Yellow, they instead are found at the Safari Zone, while in FireRed and LeafGreen, they appear rarely at Victory Road and Seven Island. In all first generation games, the ghost of a Marowak killed by Team Rocket haunts the Pokémon Tower. It can only be identified (and then battled) using the Silph Scope and cannot be captured. It passes on after being defeated, and is the mother of a Cubone that lived with Mr. Fuji.
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Marowak rarely appear at Rock Tunnel. They also appear at Routes 9 and 10 in Crystal and at the Safari Zone's Desert area in HeartGold/SoulSilver. They can also be caught at the Scary Cave course of the Pokéwalker, from which they can be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In Black and White, Marowak uncommonly appeared at Route 15.
Other Games
In Pokémon Pinball as well as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Marowak was only obtained by evolving Cubone. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Huge Storage 3 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first nine floors of Mt. Travail, and a non-playable Marowak ran a training dojo. Marowak also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Eternal Tower. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it appeared at Cavern Zone and Granite Zone.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime, a Marowak was initially featured in an episode late in the Indigo League series in which it left its trainer Otoshi after Otoshi's badges were stolen by Team Rocket, as this led the Marowak to believe that Otoshi was not worthy of it. The Marowak eventually comes around by the end of the episode to help Otoshi defeat Team Rocket. Other Marowak have also appeared throughout the anime series, usually belonging to opponent trainers such as the Orange Islands gym leader Luana.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Marowak was briefly shown during the Yellow arc as a Pokémon belonging to Super Nerd William.
Trivia
- Its name seems to be a combination of "marrow" and "whack".
