Kangaskhan is a rare and powerful kangaroo-like Pokémon introduced in the first generation games.
Information[edit]
Kangaskhan are maternal Pokémon that resemble bulkier versions of kangaroos. They are female-only and raise their young in pouches. An infant Kangaskhan rarely ventures out of its mother's pouch until it is three years old, and it is taken out once it learns to find food. The infants are also sometimes let out to play when it is safe, but the parent keeps a close eye on the youngster and will become violently enraged if someone disturbs it or tries to catch it.
It is a skilled fighter, particularly with the Comet Punch move. Kangaskhan will never run from a fight or give up whenever its baby is endangered, no matter how wounded it may be. They also sleep standing up in order to avoid crushing their babies.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Kangaskhan can rarely be found in the Safari Zone (Area 1 in Red/Blue, Area 2 in Yellow and Area 3 in FireRed/LeafGreen).
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Kangaskhan can rarely be found in the Rock Tunnel. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Kangaskhan could also be caught in the Wasteland environment of Johto's Safari Zone as well as through the Pokéwalker's Refreshing Course.
In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Kangaskhan could be found in the Great Marsh after unlocking the National Pokédex. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, Kangaskhan rarely appeared at Route 15.
Other Games[edit]
In Pokémon Snap, Kangaskhan could be found at the Beach. In Pokémon Pinball, they could be found in Fuchsia City on the Blue table. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Kangkashan could be snagged from an opponent in Citadark Isle. After being purified, this Kangaskhan could then be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Kangaskhan has also appeared in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2.
In Pokémon Trozei!, Kangaskhan could be found at Endless Level 53, Forever Level 3, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Kangaskhan could be found on the thirteenth through nineteenth floors of the Mystery Cave, while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be found on the first nine floors of Mt. Travail. In both games, a non-playable Kangaskhan runs the item storage system.
In Pokémon Ranger, Kangaskhan could be found in the Sekra Mountain Range, while in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared during missions to the Volcano Cave and Chroma Ruins. In Pokémon Rumble, it appeared at Rocky Cave.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In the Super Smash Bros. series, a trophy of Mega Kangaskhan was available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and both variations of Kangaskhan were available as two stages of a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The initial Spirit was an Advanced-rank Spirit of Kangaskhan, and at Level 99 it could be enhanced into an Ace-rank Spirit of Mega Kangaskhan, which came with the added effect of a chance of a double Final Smash. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Kangaskhan's Spirit would possess Bowser, who would be joined by Larry Koopa (representing the Kangaskhan baby) during the fight.
Other Media[edit]
- Kangaskhan have made various appearances in the anime, starting with an episode featuring a group of Kangaskhan that looked over a young boy named Tommy in the Safari Zone, whom had grown to protect them in turn with a boomerang. At the end of the episode, Tommy's real parents found him after helping to foil Team Rocket's plan to steal the Kangaskhan, and they also decided to live with the tribe as a large family. Later appearances included a Kangaskhan who let its baby play with Pikachu in a holiday special and a Kangaskhan that was used in a sumo-wrestling contest.
- A Kangaskhan was featured in an early chapter of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where Blue failed in his attempts to catch one, which led Red to realize that her baby was poisoned, at which point he provided an Antidote, and the Kangaskhan then escaped, much to Blue's chagrin. Kangaskhan was also revealed in a flashback to have been one of Professor Oak's Pokémon during his days as a serious trainer.
Trivia[edit]
- Kangaskhan's name is a pun combining "kangaroo" (the animal it is based on) with Genghis Khan (infamous real-life ancient Mongol warlord).
