Tangela is a vine-covered Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It was originally unconnected to any evolutionary lines until it was discovered to evolve into Tangrowth in the fourth generation games.

Information

Tangela's body is cloaked by a mass of blue vines which resemble seaweed. These vines are always jiggling, which is effective at unnerving opponents. The vines themselves are apparently covered in a growth of fine hair. It uses its vines to tangle any living thing, and its vines can also snap off easily and painlessly if Tangela is grabbed, so that it can make a quick getaway. Although the vines are said to stop growing, new vines will grow to replace lost ones.

The face of Tangela under the mass of its vines is unknown. It is only known to be ticklish. Tangela is also known to evolve into Tangrowth when it levels up after learning AncientPower, which it learns at Level 33 starting in the fourth generation or at Level 36 in the fifth generation.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Tangela was found at Route 21 (being rare in Red/Blue but common in FireRed/LeafGreen) and could also be obtained by trading a Venonat to a trainer at Cinnabar Island. In Yellow, Tangela only appeared in the Safari Zone. In FireRed/LeafGreen, Tangela were also uncommonly found at Treasure Beach.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Tangela commonly appeared at Routes 21, 28 and 44 and Mt. Silver. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they also had a rare chance of appearing when headbutting trees at Routes 12, 13, 14, 15, 18 and 21 and Fuchsia City. Tangela could also be caught through the Pokéwalker at the Big Forest course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Platinum, they had a rare chance of appearing at the Great Marsh. In Black and White, they were found at Route 13 and by the entrance to Giant Chasm.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, it was found at Cinnabar Island. Tangela was also featured as part of Erika's three-Pokémon team in Pokémon Puzzle League. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Tangela could be snagged from Cipher Peon Targ at Cipher Key Lair. After being purified, this Tangela could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Tangela could be found at Secret Storage 13, Endless Level 42, Forever Level 2 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Tangela could be recruited at the ninth through twelfth floors of Lapis Cave and the forty-seventh through fiftieth floors of Joyous Tower. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first eight basement floors of Waterfall Cave. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Krokka Tunnels, Waterworks, Jungle Relic and Sekra Mountain Range. A Tangela could also be obtained through a random trade with Hayley in My Pokémon Ranch, from which it could be transferred to Diamond/Pearl (as well as Platinum in Japan). Tangela also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Windy Prairie.

• In the anime, Tangela was initially featured as one of Erika's Pokémon during her gym battle with Ash. Other Tangela have since made mostly minor appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Tangela was featured as one of Erika's Pokémon.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "tangle" and "Medusa" (due to resembling her snake hair).
