Horsea is a small sea horse-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Seadra, and it has a third form, Kingdra, starting in the second generation games.

Information[edit]

Horsea has big, developed fins which allow it to move rapidly and to swim backwards while facing forward. They feed off of small insects and moss on rocks, and they have been known to shoot down bugs with precision blasts of ink from the surface of the water. Horsea also reflexively sprays special black ink or water from its mouth when it senses danger. It will employ its dorsal fin to swim to safety if threatened by a larger foe.

When in safe locations, Horsea are known to play by tangling their tails together. Its tail is wound up like a coil and used to maintain balance. Additionally, when facing a fast ocean current, Horsea uses its tail to anchor itself around rocks or coil so that it does not get washed away. Horsea usually make their nests in the shade of corals. It evolves into Seadra at Level 32.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Misty caught a Horsea at a coastal city in one episode, and it wound up helping to convince the Tentacool and Tentacruel to stop attacking the city. Horsea was not used much and later in the Kanto series it was found that Horsea became ill and was not getting enough exercise. Misty took it back to the Cerulean City gym where she performed a water ballet with it and then left it there with her sisters until she reclaimed control of the gym following the Johto series.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Horsea was shown as one of Green's Pokémon which turned out to have been given to her by Silver. It was useful for tricking enemies with its Smokescreen and inky trails. She later traded it back to Silver, and it eventually became a Kingdra.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a simple rearrangement of "sea horse".
