Umbreon is one of the two out of seven possible evolved forms of Eevee that were introduced in the second generation Pokémon games. Umbreon is the nocturnal Dark-type evolution that Eevee evolves into out of friendship at night (instead becoming Espeon if this happens during daytime), or from exposure to a Moon Shard in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Information

Umbreon evolved as a result of an Eevee's exposure to the moon's waves, which apparently changed its genetic structure. It hides silently in the darkness and usually awaits its foes to make a move. The rings on its body glow when it is about to attack and also when darkness falls, which strikes fear into anyone nearby. It can spray poisonous sweat from its pores when agitated. Its rings also glow faintly when exposed to the moon's aura, at which point it is said to gain a mysterious power.

Mainstream Games

Umbreon can only be obtained through evolution or trading from the second generation games onwards. Due to the third generation games lacking an internal clock, it is impossible to evolve Eevee into Espeon and Umbreon in those games, and they can only be obtained through trading with one of the Gamecube games (with XD, as mentioned above, containing an alternate method of evolving Eevee into these forms). For Pokémon: Black and White Versions, the player could receive their choice of an Eevee or any of its evolutions for the Pokémon Dream World by completing a minigame on Pokemon.com, and from the Dream World it could be transferred to the synched Black or White Version.

Other Games

In Pokémon Colosseum, the player character starts off with Espeon and Umbreon as dual starter Pokémon, and these Pokémon could be traded with the third generation color versions upon completion of the game's main story. In Pokémon Trozei!, Umbreon could be found Secret Storage 20 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Umbreon could be obtained by evolving Eevee with a Lunar Ribbon that requires 5 IQ Points, and in Explorers of Time and Darkness, Umbreon could be found at the first twenty-nine basement floors of Concealed Ruins and the first twenty-nine basement floors of World Abyss. It appeared at the Fiore Temple in Pokémon Ranger as well as the Chroma Ruins in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Oblivia Ruins and the Dark Temple. Umbreon also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Haunted Zone.

Other Appearances

• Umbreon has made several appearances in the Pokémon anime, with one of the Kimono Sisters owning one, and Gary Oak's own Eevee evolved into one during the Johto arc. Umbreon has also been shown as one of Johanna's Pokémon in the Sinnoh episodes.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Umbreon was shown as one of Karen's Pokémon, and Greta also used an Umbreon in battle during the Emerald arc.

Trivia

• Umbreon's name is derived from "umbra" which is Latin for shadow or ghost. The "eon" suffix is used for all of Eevee's evolutions.
