Kingdra is a powerful and elusive seahorse-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It was introduced as the new evolved form of the first generation Pokémon Seadra, which retroactively establishes it as third and final stage of Horsea's evolutionary line.

Information[edit]

Kingdra evolves from a Seadra that has been traded to another trainer while holding a Dragon Scale. They live in underwater caves at extreme ocean depths which are otherwise uninhabited, and apparently no other lifeforms can survive there. Kingdra sleep on the ocean floor to build up their energy. They are connected to storms and other natural disasters, although the Pokédex provides various explanations as to how. It is said that their yawning or waking from sleep can cause whirlpools, tornadoes or spiraling ocean currents. It is also said that when they come to the surface, they create whirlpools which can swallow ships. Other Pokédex entries claim that Kingdra create giant whirlpools whenever they move, while one says that Kingdra is instead awakened by storms, at which point they hunt for prey.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

Kingdra are not usually found in the wild and usually must be obtained through evolution. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, they had a rare chance of appearing when fishing in rippling water at Routes 17 and 18 and P2 Laboratory.

Other Games[edit]

It could only be obtained by evolving a Seadra in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 13, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Safra Sea. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at Surrounded Sea, Miracle Sea, Deep Miracle Sea and Bottomless Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at the Sea of Wailord. Kingdra also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at the Coral and Eastern Seas.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Kingdra was featured as one of Clair's Pokémon during the Johto series. It wound up being defeated by Ash's Snorlax during the gym battle with an Ice Punch. It has only made a few other minor appearances, such as being one of Molly's illusion Pokémon in the third movie and belonging to a trainer competing in the Whirl Cup.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Silver traded his Seadra for Gold's Poliwhirl early in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc to trigger their evolutions into Kingdra and Politoed. After trading back, Kingdra has remained part of Silver's main team, and he uses it to scale waterfalls. Clair was also shown to have her own Kingdra.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is simply a combination of "king" (likely to emphasize it being the highest form of the evolutionary line) with "dragon" (as in the "weedy sea dragon", a type of seahorse which Kingdra in particular resembles).
