Gligar is a winged bat-like scorpion Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It had no evolutionary line until the fourth generation, when it was revealed to evolve into Gliscor.

Information[edit]

Gligar usually build their nests on steep cliffs and spend most of their time clinging until steep cliffs. When they spot their prey, they spread their wings and glide down to attack. They can glide soundlessly through the air as if sliding while their limbs outstretched and ready to strike. Gligar always aims for the face and uses its clawed hind legs as well as the large pincers on its forelegs to hang onto its foe's face while it injects poison with the poison barb on its tail.

When a Gligar is done gliding, it will hop along the cliffs back to its nest. It evolves into a Gliscor when it levels up while holding a Razor Fang at night.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Gold, Crystal and HeartGold, Gligar was uncommonly found at Route 45. In Emerald, it rarely appeared at the Safari Zone's extension. In Diamond and Pearl, Gligar could only be found using the dual slot method, as an Emerald cartridge in the GBA slot made it uncommonly appear at Routes 206, 207, 214, 215 and 227 and at Stark Mountain. In Platinum, Gligar was only found at Route 206 under normal means and was less common at night.

In Black and White, Gligar was uncommonly found at Routes 11 and 15.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Stadium 2, a Gligar that knows Earthquake was the prize for beating the Rival in Round 2, and it could be transferred to any of the second generation color versions. A Shadow Gligar could be snagged from Hunter Frena at The Under in Pokémon Colosseum, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Gligar could also be normally caught at the Rock Poké Spot in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, and they similarly could be traded to the third generation games. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 11, Endless Level 26, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the seventh through tenth floors of Mt. Thunder, the first two floors of Mt. Thunder Peak, the thirty-first through thirty-fifth floors of Wish Cave, the fifteenth through twentieth floors of Desert Region, the fifteenth through twenty-fifth floors of Southern Cavern and the thirty-first through thirty-fifth floors of Joyous Tower.

In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Olive Jungle and Sekra Mountain Range. It could also be recruited in Explorers of Time and Darkness at the sixth through fifteenth basement floors of Spacial Rift and the first nne basement floors of Deep Spacial Rift. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Peril Cliffs. Gligar also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Wireless Tower and Light Temple.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Johto series featured a crimefighter known as Gligarman who used an actual Gligar in his war on crime (although he mostly seemed to promote his toystore). Gligarman was getting old in the episode and wanted Ash to replace him, but eventually his daughter took up the reigns to become Gligirl and inherited the Gligar. During the Sinnoh series, one episode revolved around Ash and his friends helping a group of Gligar and a Gliscor that had been blown into a city by a windstorm. One of the Gligar befriended Ash and allowed Ash to catch it after he helped the Gligar pack (while his rival Paul caught the Gliscor). Gligar was a subpar flier and cried often, but it eventually evolved into Gliscor when it saved Ash's life, using a Razor Fang that Gary had been given to Ash following a training session between the Gligar and Gary's Umbreon. Other Gligar have occasionally made appearances throughout the series.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc featured a Gligar that tried to steal Gold's Togepi egg while Gold was asleep, only for each of Gold's other Pokémon to work together to take it down, ending with the newly hatched Togepi itself beating on the Gligar.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name is a combination of "glide" (which of course is its primary action) and "gargoyle" (which it vaguely resembles, and its clinging to cliffsides may refer to gargoyles inhabiting the sides and roofs of buildings).
