Piston Hurricane is a Cuban boxer appearing as an opponent in several Punch-Out!! games. He is most well-known for his trademark "Hurricane Rush" move.

Background

Piston Hurricane was born in Havana, Cuba. However, he lost his home in a terrible storm at which point he hit the streets of Havana. Piston would then leave his home "like the wind" when the chance to turn pro came along. He was a powerful fighter, with his most well-known move being his Hurricane Rush, in which he stepped back and then barraged his enemy with a flurry of punches. Surviving it usually consists of a series of well-timed blocks.

He first appeared in the original Punch-Out!! arcade as the second opponent, where he was ranked #7 in the World Video Boxing Association. Piston originally had an afro, but he reappeared in the Super NES Super Punch-Out!! with shorter hair as the #1 fighter of the Minor Circuit.

Trivia

  • Although he only appears in two games, he seems to have inspired the similarly-named Piston Hondo, who appears in two of the three games in which Piston Hurricane does not appear. Hondo has a similar attack (which is called the Hondo Rush in the Wii game), and Great Tiger is also known for his having a similar move in the form of his Tiger Punch.
  • In the arcade Super Punch-Out!!, where he does not appear, his sprite is remodeled to make Great Tiger.
  • In Super Punch-Out!! for the Super NES, Aran Ryan acts as his template swap.
