Rusl is a villager from Ordon Village who appears as a supporting character in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Background

Rusl was a fairly young citizen of Ordon Village who was respected by the rest of the village. He was kind and frank to others, and he was seen as a leader despite the presence of Ordon's mayor. He was married to Uli, and together they had a young son named Colin. Uli eventually became pregnant with a second child as well. Rusl was good friends with one teenage villager, Link, whom he saw as a younger brother. When he was younger, he also knew Telma and her circle of friends (which included Auru, Shad and Ashei). He was also skilled at both crafting and wielding swords. This implies that Rusl was involved in some sort of unspecified action in the past before settling down at Ordon. He also seemed to have some idea of what the Twilight Realm was.

In the beginning of Twillight Princess, Rusl had crafted an Ordon Sword which was to be presented at Hyrule Castle. He was also assigned to deliver it to Hyrule, but he passed the task onto Link instead, as he felt that it was time for Link to set off and see the world. He also sent Link the fising rod after Colin had completed it, and he encouraged Link to use it in order to make Colin happy. Rusl almost went into action when he heard that Talo had gone missing in the woods, but Link returned with the boy just as Rusl was preparing to set out. Rusl noted how strange the woods had seemed lately. He also hoped to tutor Link in sword fighting when he returned. The next day, the village was attacked by Bulblins which kidnapped all of the village's children. Rusl attempted to fight them off, but he failed and was badly wounded. That night, he still wielded his sword outside his home to protect his wife, even though he was unknowingly warding off a transformed Link. Rusl spent some time recuperating in the following days and was driven to search for the children.

Rusl eventually set off to Hyrule and saw that the children were safe at Kakariko Village. He was surprised to see how much Colin had grown. Rusl later went to Hyrule Castle Town and became part of Telma's group, who worked to gather information and find ways to help Hyrule from behind the scenes. It was in this role that he was eventually reunited with Link, although he initially wore a helm which concealed his identity. Rusl eventually was sent to investigate the Sacred Grove back at Faron Forest in hopes of finding a hidden temple which contained some type of sacred power that could help to save Hyrule. His path was impeded a gorge which could only be crossed with the aid of a Golden Cucco, which he affably referred to as his partner. Rusl felt that he no longer was the man he once was, and that Link had the courage and strength that he lacked, so he convinced Link to go on with the Golden Cucco in his stead. Rusl returned to Telma's bar afterwards and suggested that Link pass his findings on to Shad. The group later showed up at Hyrule Castle and took out a swarm of enemies for him.

After Hyrule was saved, Rusl returned to Kakariko Village and brought the children back to Ordon Village in his carriage. There, the family was reunited at last, with Uli finally having given birth to their daughter.

Trivia

  • According to supplementary material, he is between 20 and 30 years old. However, some of his dialogue seems to suggest that he is older.
  • A sticker of Rusl appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
