Debut Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest

Dixie Kong is a prominent recurring character of the Donkey Kong series who has appeared as the star of two games and as a sidekick or supporting character in others. She is a small monkey of the Kong clan who is known for her long ponytail, which she can spin to glide through the air and to lift items as if it were a third appendage. Dixie is known as the best friend and possible girlfriend of Diddy Kong.

Background

In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Dixie served as Diddy's sidekick during his quest to rescue Donkey Kong from Kaptain K. Rool on Crocodile Island. She stood up for Diddy when Cranky Kong told Diddy he was not experienced enough to take on the challenge. Together, Diddy and Dixie were able to thwart K. Rool.

Dixie Kong later starred in her own adventure in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble. Donkey Kong and Diddy had gone missing, so she and Kiddy went on an adventure across the Northern Kremisphere to find them. This brought them into battle with the Kremlings and their mysterious leader KAOS, who turned out to be a robot operated by an undercover K. Rool. Dixie and Kiddy were able to save Donkey Kong, Diddy and the Banana Bird race while defeating K. Rool. Dixie and Kiddy went on a second adventure together in Donkey Kong Land III when they raced K. Rool in the race to find the mysterious Lost World. Dixie and Kiddy were able to defeat K. Rool again and win the challenge.

Dixie was also among the racers who helped Diddy Kong to free Timber's Island from the wrath of Wizpig in Diddy Kong Racing DS. This is the first game where she appeared alongside her sister, Tiny Kong.

Dixie later joined the bongo-playing craze in Donkey Konga 2 and toured with Donkey and Diddy after breaking up an argument between them. She's also become acquainted with the sports of the Mushroom Kingdom, as she has participated in Mario Superstar Baseball Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and Mario Super Sluggers. And Dixie was also playable in the Jungle Jam mode of DK: King of Swing and the multiplayer mode of DK: Jungle Climber (in which she was partnered with Funky Kong). She was also one of the three starting Kong racers in Donkey Kong Barrel Blast, with her Kremling rival being Kass.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Dixie Kong's colors have been used as one of Diddy Kong's alternate outfits in all of his playable appearances. She has also been represented by a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, a trophy and a sticker (from Donkey Konga 2) in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, a Smash Tour item (granting two midair jumps to a player) in the Wii U game and two stages of a Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Her initial Spirit is an Ace-rank Spirit using artwork from Jungle Climber. When leveled up to Level 99, the Spirit can be enhanced into a Legend-rank Spirit of Dixie Kong & Kiddy Kong (using art of them riding the hovercraft from the cover of Donkey Kong Country 3) that enhances the power of thrown items. When fought in a Spirit battle, Dixie's Spirit would possess Isabelle and fight alongside Diddy (with Dixie's color scheme) in a battle with a high level of banana peels.

Trivia

  • Dixie was also listed as a fighter in a text dump of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though she did not make the final cut. Sakurai has mentioned that Diddy and Dixie were originally intended to act as a tag team that could switch places as in Donkey Kong Country 2, but the idea was scrapped due to technical limitations.
  • One strange discrepancy about Diddy Kong Racing DS is that Tiny, who was originally described as the younger sister of Dixie, appeared to have grown into a teenager. This makes her look older than Dixie, who still appears to be a child.
  • Dixie and Tiny were added to Diddy Kong Racing DS to fill the gap left by Conker and Banjo, who were unavailable to the remake due to copyright issues.
  • In Super Mario Odyssey, there are several locations in New Donk City that are named after her: Dixie Street (which is apparently the location of Diddy's Mart) and the Dixie Theatre.
