Palkia is a legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh with control over space that was featured as the mascot for Pokémon: Pearl Version.
Information
Palkia is a Pokémon that is described as a deity in Sinnoh's religion mythology. It is known for the ability to distort space and is said to live in a gap in the parallel spacial dimension. It is said that space becomes more stable with each breath it takes. Palkia is also apparently capable of crossing over to faraway places or other dimensions at will due to its total control over the boundaries of space.
Palkia comprises a trinity with Dialga and Giratina, and HeartGold/SoulSilver demonstrates that all three are directly born from Arceus in egg form. Palkia also plays a role in the storylines of Pearl and Platinum, where Cyrus of Team Galactic tries to use the Red Chain(s) from Azelf, Uxie and Mesprit to summon Palkia (and Dialga in Platinum) to the Spear Pillar atop Mt. Coronet, so that he could use the legendary Pokémon to remake the universe in his own image. In Pearl the lake trio breaks the chain after Palkia is summoned, causing Palkia to become uncontrollable until it is defeated or caught by Lucas/Dawn. In Platinum, Cyrus summons both, but they disappear after Giratina appears and destroys the chains.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Pearl, Palkia must be battled as part of the storyline when it is summoned to the Spear Pillar, and can only be battled once. In Platinum, Palkia will appear at the Spear Pillar when the player goes there with the Lustrous Orb after defeating the Elite Four.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Palkia can be obtained in a special event requiring an Arceus. After using Arceus to travel to the Sinjoh Ruins from the Ruins of Alph, Arceus will produce an egg containing the player's choice of a Dialga, Palkia or Giratina at Level 1.

Other Games
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Palkia accuses the player of being responsible for the distortion of space and is battled as the boss of the Spacial Rift. It can be recruited on return visits. Palkia also appears as a bonus boss in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. where it appears in the Hippowdon Temple after a battle with Dialga and warps the space of the Almia region. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Palkia appeared in an optional Ranger Net mission where the player had to capture it as well as Dialga and Giratina at the Sky Fortress to meet Arceus. Palkia could also be unlocked in Pokémon Rumble through a ticket from releasing Blastoise, Empoleon, Gyarados, Dragonite and Garchomp.
Other Appearances
Video Games
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Palkia appears in the background of the Spear Pillar stage at random. It distorts the space of the stage in various ways such as tilting it, reversing the screen or flipping the stage upside down. It will also sometimes fire blasts through the lower cave. A trophy and sticker of Palkia are also obtainable in the game.
In Other Media
- Palkia was first featured in the tenth Pokémon movie, where it engages Dialga in an epic battle that effects Darkrai. Afterwards it appears again in the twelfth movie, where Giratina engages Dialga and Palkia in battle just as Sheena had gotten the two to make peace, but ultimately the three ally with Ash and his friends in the conflict with Arceus. They all left in peace after the timeline was changed to erase Arceus's bitterness. Dialga and Palkia were also featured in climax of a three-part episode of the Sinnoh series where Cyrus summoned them to the Spear Pillar and had them create a portal to a new world. Ash's group was able to destroy the Red Chain, however, which freed both of them while dissipating the portal after Cyrus had gone through it. The two then engaged in combat until Ash's group was able to work with the lake Pokémon to calm them down and send them away in peace.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Palkia appeared with Dialga at the climax of the Diamond/Pearl arc where Cyrus summoned them both and forced them to fight with the Red Chains, even after one of the chains was destroyed. Their battles caused various distortions in time and space which threatened to destroy everything. Diamond's new Regigigas was able to slow them down, and ultimately the battle was stopped when Diamond and Pearl destroyed the last chain. They then departed.
Trivia
- Its name is based off of "pearl" (more evidently in Japanese form), due to its association with the Pearl Version.
