Debut Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Gatrie is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and its sequel, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He was a knight who was innocent, but easily misguided by his friend Shinon. He also hit on women at every chance.

Background[edit]

Gatrie became a member of the Greil Mercenaries along with Shinon. Like Shinon, he often saw his job as a mercenary as lowly work, and hoped for a better job. Gatrie became one of the senior members of the mercenaries, along with Shinon, Titania, and Greil himself. He and Shinon also used special "thunder and lightning tactics", in which Gatrie hit the enemies hard like thunder while Shinon rained arrows down like lighting. The two were first seen at the end of "Chapter 2: Rescue", when he and Shinon came in time to save Rolf from an assassin (although Gatrie lagged behind due to heavy armor and Shinon wound up doing actual deed). They were then playable in "Chapter 3: Pirates Aground", when they worked with Ike and Titania in repelling pirates and afterwards hinted at their intentions to eventually leave the mercenaries, although Gatrie later apologized for these comments.

In "Chapter 5: Flight!", when the mercenaries voted on what to do with Princess Elincia, he was too busy analyzing her appearance and ultimately decided to go along with whatever Greil decided. When the mercenaries went on the run in "Chapter 6: A Brief Division", Gatrie and Shinon went with Greil to distract the Daein forces. They met up with Ike and the others again in "Chapter 7: Shades of Evil", but Greil died after the battle. Ike succeeded Greil as commander, but Shinon and Gatrie were unwilling to take orders for someone so young and unexperienced, so they left the Greil Mercenaries and went their separate ways.

Gatrie wound up traveling to Begnion, where he served as a bodyguard for Lady Astrid, whom had joined the Begnion knights. In "Chapter 13: A Guiding Wind", Gatrie was reunited with Ike and the mercenaries when all of them were fighting off bandits. If Astrid was recruited into Ike's ranks and spoke to Gatrie, then Gatrie would rejoin the Greil Mercenaries in order to continue protecting Astrid. At the end of the game, Gatrie had decided that he preferred the easy-going life of a mercenary to his stint as a soldier and remained with the Greil Mercenaries.

Gatrie was still among the mercenaries' ranks three years later in Radiant Dawn. He returned from hiding with the rest of the mercenaries at the end of "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings". In "Chapter 1: Laguz and Beorc" of "Part 3: Interscting Vows", Gatrie's latest crush was shown to be the laguz Lyre, which Shinon did not understand due to his prejudice against the laguz. At the end of the game, it was said that Gatrie became a famous mercenary and a household name. He found many women over the years but never found true love.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

In Path of Radiance, Gatrie is capable of having Support conversations with four other characters.

  • Astrid- Astrid had heard that Gatrie had worked among the Greil Mercenaries before, so she asks Gatrie to teach her how to fight like a mercenary. Gatrie stalls her because he has no idea how to train people, but he decides to go through with it because he thinks it is a sign she is interested in him. In the second conversation, Gatrie begins his first lesson until he cannot remember what to say next and tells her he'll continue next time. Gatrie once again is left thinking that Astrid is taken with him. In the final conversation, Gatrie quizzes Astrid and asks her is she has a boyfriend, at which point she says she is engaged. Gatrie begins to sniff and walks away from her. However, he then leads himself to believe that Astrid told him that only because she wanted him to swoon her off her feet and steal her away, so he rushes back to talk to her.
  • Ilyana- In the first conversation, Gatrie tries talking to Ilyana, but she doesn't notice him talking for a while. She eventually introduces herself, but she leaves just as Gatrie begins bragging about his accomplishments. In the second conversation, Gatrie tries offering her several gifts, but she seems unimpressed with them and leaves once again. In the final conversation, Ilyana is not interested in Gatrie's latest gift and Gatrie mentions he was hoping she was, so he could take her out for dinner. Ilyana then says she would love to have dinner with him. She tries to remember Gatrie's name and at the same time looks forward to the delicious food.
  • Marcia- Gatrie meets up with Marcia and comments on how Titania used to be their only female mercenary, but things have started to shape up in his absence. Marcia recognizes him as one of the mercenaries who helped to fight off the pirates (from Chapter 3) and promises to return the favor. Gatrie assures her that her being talented and gorgeous is repayment enough. In the next conversation, Gatrie invites Marcia to watch him in a sparring match with Ike and brags about his abilities, but he is given a humiliating defeat at Ike's hands. In the final conversation, Gatrie wallows in his misery until Marcia cheers him up by saying that Ike could beat anybody and Gatrie still seemed very strong. She asks Gatrie to be her sparring partner, and Gatrie agrees, thinking that the embarrassing defeat could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
  • Shinon- Gatrie comes to Shinon asking for advice, but Shinon will only do so if Gatrie buys him dinner. Gatrie is unsure how to spend his reward money and when Shinon doesn't seem to mind what Gatrie gets, Gatrie reminds Shinon of various times he criticized him for his previous purchases. Shinon tells Gatrie that he's only telling the truth and then asks for dinner, but Gatrie realizes that Shinon didn't really give him advice. In the second conversation, Shinon attempts to lose Gatrie when he comes seeking advice again, but Gatrie ultimately earns Shinon's ear by offering him dinner at an expensive restaurant. This time he asks for advice on what to get his new girlfriend, and they decide to discuss it over dinner. In the final conversation, Gatrie is filled with glee because he thinks he is fated to marry his girlfriend, who had a terminal illness which Gatrie paid to cure, and it was coincidentally the exact amount of money he had. Gatrie's date doesn't show up, so Shinon informs him that he's been conned. Shinon decides to treat Gatrie to dinner this time, which Gatrie sees as a real treat.

In Radiant Dawn, Gatrie has an automatic Bond Support with Shinon.
