Espeon is one of the two out of seven possible alternate evolved forms of Eevee that was were introduced in the second-generation Pokémon games. Espeon is the Psychic-type evolution and evolves out of happiness during the daytime (instead becoming Umbreon if at night) or by exposing Eevee to a Sun Shard in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Information

Espeon is covered in fine hair that it uses to read air currents in order to predict things such as the enemy's next move or the weather. The tip of its forked tail quivers when it is predicting an opponent's move. They are extremely loyal to any trainers that they see as worthy, and it is believed that they developed their precognitive powers specifically to protect their trainers from harm. Its fur looks and feels like velvet, while the orb on its forehead glows when it uses its psychic powers.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

In all of the color versions from the second generation onwards, Espeon can only be obtained through evolution. In the third generation games, which did not have an ingame clock, Espeon could only be obtained by trading it from one of the Gamecube games.

Other Games

In Pokémon Colosseum, Espeon and Umbreon were the dual starter Pokémon of the player character and could be traded to any of the third generation Gameboy Advance color versions after the main story was completed. In Pokémon Channel, Espeon appeared at Mt. Snowfall at night in any weather. In Pokémon Trozei!, Espeon could be found at Secret Storage 20 and Mr. Who's Den.

Espeon could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, but in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be found at the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort as well as the first seventeen floors of Shimmer Hill. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Fiore Temple, while in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it could be found at Hippowdon Temple.

Other Appearances

• Espeon has appeared in several episodes of the Pokémon anime over the years. One of the Kimono Girls, Sakura, was shown having trouble deciding what she wanted her Eevee to evolve into, and it evolved into an Espeon by its next appearance, and she went on to defeat Misty at the Cerulean Gym with it in a later special. Other Espeon have appeared in minor cameos and battles, including a Battle Frontier episode where it was the last Pokémon Anabel used against Ash, and it was defeated by his Pikachu.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red's Eevee originally had a Team Rocket modification that caused it to painfully transform between its original three evolutions, but this ended when it permanently evolved into an Espeon during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc.

Trivia

• Its name is derived from "ESP" (extra-sensory perception), which is a term for psychic powers. The "eon" suffix is commonly shared among all of Eevee's evolutions.
