Reshiram is one of the legendary Pokémon featured in the fifth generation games Pokémon: Black and White Versions. It acted as the mascot for Black Version. Its counterpart and rival is Zekrom.
Information
According to the legends of Unova, Reshiram and Zekrom were originally one singular Dragon Pokémon that twin heroes used to found Unova. However, the two heroes began to argue as one wanted to pursue truth while other wanted to pursue ideals. This conflict caused the dragon to split into Reshiram and Zekrom, and each of the sided with one of the brothers. Reshiram went to the brother who wanted truth, and wanted to usher in a new world of good.
The battle was a stalemate due to the two having once been the same Pokémon, and the brothers eventually decided on a draw. A generation later, the sons of the two heroes started the battle all over again, which caused Reshiram and Zekrom to wreck Unova in the process of their battle. The two Dragon-type Pokémon disappeared from history at this point, but in actuality they lost their physical form and fell into slumber, being turned into a pair of stones. Reshiram was imprisoned within the Light Stone. It was said that Reshiram and Zekrom would only be awakened from their respective stones when they recognized a true hero.
Reshiram has the ability to produce flames in the air from its tail which burn everything around it. When its tail flares, the heat energy moves the atmosphere and alters the world's weather.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Black Version, Reshiram's Light Stone is kept at the Nacrene City Museum (having been found by the Relic Castle), but it is not recognized by Professor Juniper and given to the player by Lenora until after the player has explored the Relic Castle. Afterwards, the Light Stone only recognized the player as a hero and awakens at N's Castle when N is prepared to battle the player. Reshiram can be battled repeatedly (restoring its health every time it faints) at this point until it is caught and must be caught to proceed with the game. The exception is if the player's party and all of the boxes are somehow full, which will cause Reshiram to instead await the player at Dragonspiral Tower later.
Reshiram cannot be caught in White Version. In this version, the Light Stone was instead at Dragonspiral Tower and winds up becoming N's partner Pokémon. It is part of his party for the final battle, and at the end of the game he departs from Unova riding atop it.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- Prior to the release of Black/White, floats of Reshiram and Zekrom were featured at the 2010 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
- Reshiram has been alluded to at the beginning of the Pokémon anime's Black/White-based series. The fourteenth anime movie will also uniquely have two versions, one which features Reshiram while the other features Zekrom.
Trivia
- The "shira" in its name is taken from the Japanese word for white, and the "re" was chosen due to having a softer sound than the "ze" in Zekrom.
- Reshiram and Zekrom were designed to correspond with the Taoist idea of yin-yang. Reshiram represents the more passive "yin" and so was designed with a softer and more feminine appearance.
