Marill is a small water mouse Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. Its evolved form is Azumarill. Although it originally was the first stage in its line, it was later discovered to potentially evolve from the baby form Azurill in the third generation games.

Information

Marill and Azumarill will only give birth to an Azurill if one of them is holding the Sea Incense during the breeding period. Azurill evolves into Marill when it levels up with a high amount of happiness. Marill's tail is filled with oil which is lighter than water, so that it acts as a life preserver which keeps Marill floating in the water. They usually dive underwater and feed on aquatic plants while their tails remain above water like a buoy, even during dangerous currents. This is helped by its tail being flexible and configured to stretch.

It usually wraps its tail around a tree while fishing for food at the side of a fast-moving stream. Marill's body is also covered in water-resistant fur, which makes it capable of swimming at high speed despite water resistance. Marill will evolve into Azumarill at Level 18.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Marill was rarely found at Mt. Mortar. In Crystal it was much more common but less so at night, could also be found by surfing, and it also rarely appeared at Route 42 at night. In HeatGold and SoulSilver, it also appeared at the Safari Zone's Meadow area on foot at night and at all times of the day when surfing. It could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Resort course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. Marill was also featured as the main Pokémon of the friendly rival Lyra (or Ethan) in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Marill was commonly found by surfing at Routes 102, 111, 114, 117 and 120 (appearing uncommonly on foot as well in the later two routes) and Petalburg City. It was also found at the Safari Zone's extension in Emerald. In LeafGreen, it could be found by surfing at Four Island (commonly), Icefall Cave (rarely) and Ruin Valley (commonly by surfing and rarely on foot).

In Diamond and Pearl, Marill appeared both on foot and by surfing at the Great Marsh. In Platinum, it was found at Routes 212 and 215, being more common at night, and it was also among the Pokémon that could be randomly placed in the Trophy Garden by Mr. Backlot on a daily basis.

Other Games

Marill was featured in Pokémon Puzzle League as part of Tracey's three-Pokémon team. In Pokémon Puzzle Challenge, Marill could be unlocked by defeating the Swimmer in Challenge Mode, who only appeared if the player had completed a 4-chain or higher prior to facing Clair on Normal or higher difficulty. In the line of Pokémon e-Reader games, Marill was featured as an opponent in a swimming race against Poliwrath and Golduck in the "GO, Poliwrath!" minigame, and it also appeared in one version of the "Lifesaver" short where it was among the chain of Pokémon holding Pikachu underwater. Marill appeared at the Secret Cove in Pokémon Channel, and in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire it could be caught at the Lake on the Sapphire Field.

In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 5, Secret Storage 11, Endless Level 2 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the fourth through sixth floors of Wish Cave. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it was recruitable at the first twenty basement floors of Blizzard Island, the first ten basement floors of Crevice Cave, the first four basement floors of Lower Crevice Cave and the first nineteen basement floors of Mt. Avalanche. Marill also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Dolce Island, Silver Falls and the Ice Temple.

Video Games

• In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Marill appeared among the Pokémon that could be randomly summoned using the Pokéball item. It will simply rush forward while using Double Slap to slap anyone in its way. A trophy of Marill also appeared in the game.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, a mischievous Marill was introduced in the "Pikachu's Vacation" short that was attached to the first Pokémon movie, where it wound up going on an adventure with Pikachu at an amusement park. This acted as a sneak preview of the Pokémon due to the second generation not being released yet, and the anime continued this by featuring Marill as Tracy Sketchit's main Pokémon during the Orange Islands season. Marill have made various appearances since, and in the Sinnoh series Lyra appeared with her own Marill.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, wild Marill have sometimes made appearances, but their presence is ultimately minor compared to their evolved form.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "marine" (which refers to both its marine habitat as well as its marine blue cover) and "rill" (a small river or brook).
