Doduo is a two-headed ostrich-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. Its evolved form is Dodrio.

Information

This Pokémon was apparently discovered as a sudden mutation. Doduo have two heads which contain completely identical brains, although a scientific study reported that on rare occasions, there will be examples of a Doduo containing a set of different brains. These heads never sleep at the same time, as one will stay awake to look out for enemies while the other is sleeping. They have short wings which make flying difficult (although it can still Fly), but they compensate for this by being able to run at high speeds with its developed legs. While running, it alternately raises and lowers its two heads in order to maintain balance and remain stable.

They live on grassy plains and leave giant fooprints that are up to four inches deep. If they meet an enemy that they perceive as a threat, they will run away at speeds reaching 60 miles per hour. Doduo's two heads also seem capable of communicating emotions between each other through some form of telepathy. It develops another head when it evolves into Dodrio at Level 31.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Doduo were uncommonly found at Routes 16, 17 and 18 and at the Safari Zone (except in Yellow).

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Doduo appeared at Routes 22, 26, 27 and 28 and at Mt. Silver. In this generation, they appeared only during daylight. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Doduo could also be found at the Safari Zone's Wetland and Rocky Beach areas. It could also be caught on the Pokéwalker's Refreshing Field course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, it was found at the Safari Zone. They only appeared in swarms at Sinnoh's Route 202 in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum and at Unova's Route 12 in Black and White.

Other Games

Doduo appeared in Pokémon Pinball, where it was found at Cycling Road and Safari Zone. In Pokémon Snap, Doduo appeared at the Beach. In the Pokémon e-Reader series, Doduo was featured in the "Jumping Doduo" minigame were it ran an obstacle course, and the player had it make it jump over obstacles. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Doduo could be caught at the Safari Zone on the Ruby Field. It also appeared in Pokémon Trozei! at Secret Storage 17, Endless Level 40, Forever Level 49 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Doduo was found at the first four floors of Great Canyon, the seventh through twelfth floors of Pitfall Valley, the thirty-fifth through thirty-ninth floors of Joyous Tower and the seventh through twelfth basement floors of Remains Island. They could also be recruited in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness at the first nine floors of Mt. Bristle and the first forty-eight floors of Final Maze. They only appeared at Kisara Plains in Pokémon Ranger. It was much more common in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, being found at Chicocle Path, School Path, Ranger School, Vien Forest, Pueltown, Union Road, Ranger Union and Chroma Road. It also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Windy Prairie.

• Doduo have only made a few minor appearances in the Pokémon anime. It was shown as one of Gary Oak's Pokémon at the end of the Indigo League series, and it evolved into Dodrio shortly afterwards.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, during the Red/Green/Blue arc Mr. Fuji was shown to have a deceased Doduo buried at Lavender Town's Pokémon Tower, and by driving out Team Rocket's presence there they able to let it continue resting in peace. During the Yellow arc it was featured as part of Yellow's team and evolved into a Dodrio during her final battle with Lance.

Trivia

• Its name is a play on the name of dodo (a flightless bird known for being extinct and also often associated with being dimwitted) combined with "duo" (which refers to the Pokémon's two heads).
