Cacnea is a small cactus-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. Its evolved form is Cacturne.

Information

Cacnea live in arid locations such as deserts and have water storage capabilities akin to that of the actual cactus plant, which allows it to survive for thirty days without needing more water. Cacnea attracts prey with a strong aroma and then paralyzes the prey by shooting sharp thorns from its body. It normally attacks by swinging its spiked arms around. They have yellow flowers which bloom once a year and are actually more beautiful and fragrant in more arid and harsh environments.

Cacnea evolves into Cacturne at Level 32.

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, it could be found at Route 111, being common in the first two versions and rare in Emerald. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it was rarely found at Route 228. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cacnea could appear at the Safari Zone's Desert area if enough Forest objects were present.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Cacnea was found in the Wilderness on the Sapphire Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Endless Level 5, Forever Level 5, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the first four floors of Mt. Thunder, the thirty-third through thirty-fifth floors of Joyous Tower and the first four basement floors of Oddity Cave, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first eight floors of the Northern Desert. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at the Haruba Desert.

• In the Pokémon anime, Cacnea was featured as the main Pokémon of James of Team Rocket for the Hoenn and Battle Frontier series. He obtained at the end of the same episode in which he released his previous main Pokémon, his Weezing, and he befriended it with a bag of cookies. Cacnea's recurring gag was that it always tried to hug James and wound up unintentionally hurting it with its thorns. During the Sinnoh series, James initially continued to use Cacnea alongside his new acquisition, Carnivine, until about a quarter of the way into the series when Gardenia tried helping James's Cacnea to learn the Drain Punch. James was eventually convinced to give the Cacnea to Gardenia so that it could achieve its true potential.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Cacnea made a cameo appearance at the beginning of the Ruby/Sapphire arc. Wally was also shown to own a Cacturne that he had caught as a Cacnea.

Trivia

• Cacnea's name is a play on "cactus" seemingly combined with the end of its Japanese name which refers to "debonair".
